Cornichons, Gherkins — Ever make your own?

I treated myself to some country pâté, a baguette and some cornichons — all very pricy.

I wondered about making my own French gherkins or cornichons and figured that the limiting factor would be the availability of those fresh, 2 inch cornichon cucumbers. I have never seen them in any market (New England, USA).

I looked up a recipe on Spruce Eats and that site said the cukes were usually of a type called ”Fin de Meaux.” However. reviews of these seeds seemed disappointing.

Anyone pickle their own gherkins or find those fresh small cornichons? Or grown them? The market sold very tiny pickles for $13 a pound, so I only bought a few spoons worth.
