Rusty - the only real difference is tequila is made from a specific Blue Weber Agave primarily in Jalisco. Mezcal can be made from one of the other 30 or so other varieties of Agave plant. There is also a difference between the two in how the juice is extracted from the Agave hearts before the fermentation. ETA: Mezcal also usually has a drunk worm in the bottle.
