Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid! And...his Sundance catalog, I did order several things from it. He was an AMAZING man! Had an AMAZING career.

I can't think of even one of his movies, either as an actor or a director, that I didn't like. If he was in a movie, I went to see it. I was never disappointed. I feel fortunate that I was of an age to love and appreciate all of his movies. Jeremiah Johnson was one of my favorites and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was another of course. So many favorites. I know he was getting up there in age, but it was still a surprise to me to see that he had passed this morning.

I think I first saw him in Barefoot in the Park all those years ago and was smitten. Quite a career and LEGEND.

He was outstanding in The Sting which is another where he teamed up with Paul Newman.

He had a good run...RIP.

Three Days of the Condor was on last night and I watched it for the umpteenth time. No one looked as good as he did in a tweed blazer. ;-)

He did a lot of good work - in both acting and environmental activism.

What a man.

He was always a huge favorite of mine. I saw all his movies and was there ever a more gorgeous man in his younger years? We're losing all the icons of our day, all the time now.

Utah, must be God's Country! Two icons same State, with in a week of each other. One made a ton of money play acting the other changing America. Both provided hours of 'entertainment'. America is a very curious group of people when you look at where they put their money. Pretty sure I've only seen two of Redford's movies. The Sting and Butch Cassidy. Can't say I was compelled to seek out any others.

The whole movie was outstanding…one of a kind! Will never forget my reaction at the end the first time I saw it.

Robert Redford directed Ordinary People in my area, I was away at school at the time but I know a lot of locals were extras. We've identified where Conrad's locker was in the school, and enjoy the scenes of the town. We watch it again from time to time because it's so good, but also to see familiar places (same with John Hughes' movies).

And he played opposite Barbara in The Way We Were...and he and Meryl in Out of Africa. With Dustin in All the President's Men. So many good movies.

I've never been much of a Barbra Streisand fan but to me Redford made the movie outstanding. As he did with most others he was involved with, in no matter what capacity.

Not only was he one of the best actors of our time, but he was also a huge environmentalist and had many causes he supported. It must have crushed him to see the anti-environmental policies now happening.

I always liked him, and wished he did more in his later years. It was good to see him in the Avenger universe, even if he was the bad guy. One would never think of him as the bad guy. An inimitable force.

Barefoot in the Park is one of my favorite comedies. Ordinary People was an incredible directorial debut. May he RIP

He was great! Wonder how he escaped all the negative, and often untrue stories that stars get caught up in? Just clean living, I guess. What a guy!

I agree that I’ve never seen him in anything that wasn’t great. One of his sexiest moments, imo, was the hair washing scene in Out Of Africa! I had to laugh when I read that he was concerned about doing a film with Barbra. He didn’t want her ”sing in the middle of it”! He said that Streep was his favorite actress to work with and Newman remained his best friend for the rest of his life.

The Chicago Tribune had a story about his studio wanting to cast Redford in "The Graduate". The director said he couldn't possibly cast Redford in what became Dustin Hoffman's part because Redford could never be convincing as a looser. To support his argument, he asked Redford if he'd ever been turned down by a girl. Redford asked, "What's 'turned down'?"

I haven't seen much about his parents, any sibs, or his life before he started making movies.

Even tho' he was a fine actor, I loved him for his environmental concerns and support of the Natural Resources Defense Council. I hope he left them a bundle to fight current disregard for protection of the environment. I'm sorry he's gone. I believe he has an extended family.

I liked everything he did, from his acting and directing to his environmental concerns. Very sad to hear that he is gone, and I heard that Jane Fonda is particularly grieved.

In 1996 or 1997, he bought a pair of table lamps that I designed for his NY penthouse:

We made these in several different finishes, including one that was white gold leaf with yellow gold leaf ring details. This one is all 22K gold leaf, matte and burnished - the ring details are burnished.

I wonder if today's women are attracted to Redford's looks.

Articles call him 'blond', but I'd say 'redhead', especially given that pale skin. Anyone know details about his family of origin? I don't recall anything, and it's odd for fan magazines not to have broadcast every little thing about such a big star.

The lamp passed the 8° tilt test required by UL, and so it is not as tippy as it might look. It is much more difficult to get floor lamps to pass this test.

I always thought that he was blond - especially when he was younger. His ancestry was Irish, Scottish, and English, and so he probably has redheaded relatives, which could affect his complexion, but his hair still looks blond to me. It is possible that his hair was bleached slightly when he was younger, for certain roles.

Thanks for explaining, Lars. I love black shades like those. They are on two of our LR lamps. You would hate these. They have polished brass 'Welsh dragons' atop black cylinders, with a little more polished brass inset on round black wood bases. I bought them when the Frederick Cooper lamp factory in Chicago closed. An impulse buy that I still like.

Re: Redford. I was thinking more of his parents, any sibs, school friends.

Love the lamps! Redford was in his early years the most handsome man in Hollywood...ever. As an old man, he still retained his good looks.

So did I until some photos showed more of a strawberry blond. Could be right about his hair being slightly bleached.

I once saw Paul Newman in person, not more than 6’ from me. He was not very tall…maybe 5’ 8” at the very most. I notice in some photos Redford looks about the same height. I always thought of him as taller than that. The last scene in The Sting shows Redford and Newman walking down an alley together. They look the same height, although I realize that could have been camera magic.

RIP Mr. Redford, beautiful man with beautiful works. The Hollywood men of yesteryears such as Redford, Newman, Connery and Brosnan are quite handsome and so easy on the eyes.
