Nature has its own thermometer. Crickets can reveal the temperature through their chirps. If you count the chirps for 15 seconds and add 40 you get the temperature in Fahrenheit. :-)

Not sure what you're thinking of, but I remember an anecdote about people being frustrated by the long wait for an elevator, so they installed mirrors. People were so busy looking at themselves or others that the wait seemed faster and the complaints stopped.
