Living Room Design Feedback

last modified: 27 days ago

I’ve been working on my living room and would love your honest thoughts. What do you think about the overall vibe?

I’m trying out a Japandi style in the space—do the colors and layout feel cohesive to you?

UPDATE: Added my own living room. It looks messy as I was in a rush, but hopefully will give some ideas. Please ignore boxes in front of the fireplace :)

At first glance I thought it looks great but looking more closely it's all cabinets/table in many shades of wood. One hard bench to sit on. What will you use the room for? I dislike the TV console color the most. The mirror is too high, it only reflects the ceiling. Artwork would be better

A waiting room cobbled together with leftover furniture pieces belonging to the 4 doctors in the practice ...

I would remove the wood slats on the wall and shelves and white cabinet, they don't coordinate with the TV cabinet and the wall doesn't look balanced (looks like you had leftover slats that you just installed there in the corner). Sorry... I would replace the fake plant with a real one. Work on window treatment and I'm presuming there's a sofa in the room other than the 2 chairs in front of the window. I would replace the mirror with art above the fireplace.

Thank you for all the feedback — that was my gut telling me too. I agree that artwork would be a better choice than the mirror. While I can adjust the slat wall, floating shelves, and cabinet, I’m having a hard time replacing the media console. I need something minimalist, floating-style, wide, and within budget.

The console’s color changes with the light but looks similar to this walnut-tone piece:

I tried a charcoal slat wall and black cabinet, but they made the space feel too dark. Would replacing the slat wall with a color similar to the fireplace insert (beige or cream) help lighten the room? Or should I consider replacing the slat wall altogether? I’d still like to keep the floating shelves for display purposes.

That's my living room. The Havenly designer created based on my input and we are still working on it to make improvement. Slat wall and floating shelves are an ideas picked up from Pinterest as I want to achieve Japandi look. However I don't like the black slat as it makes the room looks darker. The media console is also not the real product that I want to buy.

Let's go back to the picture I posted. I need something tall to balance the fireplace and to display my collective. I considered a slim ladder bookcase but the the depth will cover the window too much and is not as tall as the slat wall. I need some fresh ideas.

Install a longer TV natural wood console, widen the slats area and paint the slats a cream colour with natural wood shelves.

Love your idea, @lisedv and thank you! Finding a long natural floating style wood console is hard unless a diy or taking a route by buying 2 of the same consoles. With the walnut media console I have, will a glass or another different material of storage table placed next to the console will be able to break the wood chaotic in the design?

I think that buying 2 identical floating consoles and installing them together would be a good solution and certainly less expensive than having one custom made.

Why do you want to place a storage unit at the end of the console you currently have? That's what ruins the balance on the wall. What is it you want to store?

The fireplace does not need "something tall to balance it". Your idea actually makes the space feel/look off balance.

@lisedv, I changed the cabinet idea with open bookshelves and added sloppy photoshopped pictures (I was in a rush) in my original post. I wanted to display board games, action figure (also looking for a way to display them in an artistic way) and store game consoles and books in the tv console.

Unretouched photos of your actual room would help and without all the clutter. This is confusing.
