Let me ask others: do you treat your finger cuticles — soak and push back with somethink like an orange stick? Maybe I should try to do that regularly. I get lots of hangnails. I use lotions, but they just wash off.

I don't soak them, but I do use a cuticle cream and orange sticks. They really help keep the hangnails at bay.

I've only developed hard cuticles in old age. I just used a gel and orangewood stick to push them back so the little 'moons' would show. Now, though, like the rest of my skin, the cuticles are dry. They will not stay back. can only see the moons on my thumbnails.

I've also had to buy some seriously heavy duty clippers for toenails. I found a little electric grinder kit at the podiatrist that is helpful.

I push them back in the shower when they're soft. I use my nails. Never had a hang nail. But since I'm a gardener I don't bother much with my nails as long as they're short and clean.

I have short nails — they are soft and tear easily. But good point about pushing back the cuticles. I hope I can remember.

If your nails are soft and tear easily, you should probably use some clear nail polish or nail hardener. I do that occasionally, and I've found that my nails chip more easily now than they did when I was a bit younger.

I do the whole mani & pedi thang. I just use a plain nail clipper, but I do own the "Podiatrist nail clippers". DH keeps them in his vanity. Click to see Either one works well. Right now: my toes are a bright fire engine red & my fingers are the palest pink.

When I trained as a hairdresser a million years and another lifetime ago, we also trained as manicurists as there was no such thing as estheticians. We were trained to NEVER cut cuticles, except to remove hangnails. I would suspect you get so many hangnails because you are cutting your cuticles. Vicious circle! Try keeping them softened and pushed back for a few months and see if they don't improve. Coconut oil is really a good softener and hand cream and you smell good enough to eat!

I think she's calling the hangnail a cuticle. You need good clippers to get the cut "low" on a hangnail. She's using an orange stick to push the cuticle back before applying polish. It's ALL good! 🥀

Yes, Olychick and nicole. I think one isn’t supposed to cur the actual cuticle — I guess it may look okay at first, but actually creates rough tears? Is this your take?

I have errant pieces of skin in addition to hang nails. Nipping a hangnail with my yeeth isn’t a good techique, not is pulling on them. I once had a very ted and sore finger — it looked like ~ cellulitis. I almost went to the doctor, but soaked it, put bacitracin like ointment and a bandaid on it.

Nipping existing hangnails and lifted skin is better than pulling or biting ;(

I have tried clear nail polish for soft nails. It helps a bit as does quickly fine diamond filing out any rough spot at the tip of nail.

I envy people with hard nails and thick hair. I got cheated — the only thing good about it is that I’ve never painfully snapped a long fingernail and I don’t need to shave my legs.

Multi purpose all in one. Scrape and cut those cuticles right off the fingers.

Yes, @petalique, that's my take. I did think you were trimming the whole cuticle off from the way I read your post. And, yes, a good sharp cutter is how to handle hangnails, not your teeth!!

But, indeed I have trimmed the entire cuticle. Works for a day ;/

I have thin flexible nails too - and they're also short and round. I mostly use nail clippers to clip off those nagging little hangnails. I was taught never to deliberately cut into cuticles either, and the few times I did made for painful results.

I'm with Carolb on those little tools. I bought a 3 pack from Amazon and have them in my car, next to my chair, etc. I can tend to be a hangnail picker so these tools help immensely.
