Large Outdoor Patio with 2 separate Pergolas

Hello - I have a pretty large open yard and I’m not sure what to do with all the space. I have two separate and distant pergolas. My main issue is nobody wants to sit under the furthest away pergola which holds the dining table and chairs. Everybody wants to crowd around the barbecue barstools and outdoor sofa seating area. I like people to sit for their meals at the dining table, but if I move the dining table closer to the sofa, seating area then the pergola, which it is under right now will be empty and the dining table will be without a pergola which feels unhome-y (and might look weird next to the sofa that is under a pergola). Any suggestions what I could put under thee empty pergola? and any suggestions how I can make the dining table flow better with the sofa area/Bbq?

Switch the furniture so dining table is under pergola now sheltering sofa and vice versa.

Is it feasable to move the dining area pergola beside the other one to make one large space? They look similiar.

I would move the dining table and chairs next to the BBQ and create a seating/conversation area where you have the dining table.

Set up another Tiki Bar with it.

woodyoak - He's going to build me a 50 foot arbor and gazebo next year. So far he's built me a kids playhouse/future toolshed. He is an amateur woodworker and this was the first thing he ever built. He bought a table saw for this so he could get straight cuts, and a router to soften the edges. That and a skill saw were the only tools he used. I designed it and he built it. He just got a bunch of books from the library on woodworking, then went at it! He is a good reader and doer. (did a first stone wall, ceramic tile, etc. after just reading a book on it.) I know I'm lucky!

Wood is always moving, especially when it's outside. Rain, snow, sun, humidity...all those things, and more, will cause wood to shrink, expand, bow, warp, twist, and split. This movement is even more prevalent in pressure treated wood. You buy it at home depot, or lowes...it's wet, and it's been stored in a warehouse. You take it home, and put it in the sun...uh-oh. Before you know it, there are big cracks in it, and your 2 by's are cupping. I only mentioned pressure treated because that's what you used for your pergola. All wood has movement, so you just build with that in mind, and don't get upset with the end result...over time. BTW...Nice job with the pergola. and the pavers. Me. I'm partial to Ipe decks over stone pavers. So much nicer to walk on barefoot. steve

What type of patio umbrella - or pergola?

There is some geometry involved in figuring this out, as I think it would depend on which way the sun hits the space at the times you would most need shade, and where an umbrella could be placed. I have a very fair skinned grandson toddler and in order to let him play out in my garden in the summer midday, we needed some shade over his sandbox and water table area. I bought a wonderful 9' umbrella from Costco (online delivered for free) that tilts, if needed, and provides a great deal of shade (more than you would think, for its size, but they also have an 11'). It's Sunbrella fabric; the whole thing is wonderful quality. I also bought the stand from them. It's heavy, but I can woman-handle it myself to different areas if I need to. I'd increase the size of the dining pergola so it can also have sofa and chairs space. Also adding a bar with frig to support the seating. Maybe a tv also.

I agree with @Rho Dodendron to switch the two spaces because it's natural for the dining space to be near the kitchen. Move the current seating area where the dining is and add a couple lounge chairs next to that pergola to drape towels over when needed.

Not sure how much sun those pergolas block but perhaps consider adding a wind sail under the seating area one to have better shade there, and/or add some Coolaroo roll shades to the sides of the pergola.

Yes, I would reverse the function of the areas. I, also, very deliberately, have a dining patio near the kitchen and a separate distant patio for lounging overlooking the rear garden. If there is no food on the table, guests will be compelled to gravitate to the sitting area further away. It functions great for us!

I agree with the previous suggestions to swap the dining table with sofa and chairs. The dining table closer to the grill makes more sense.

That far area just doesn’t look welcoming. The gardens need to be lush to hide the fencing and add a great chandelier. I like the idea of moving the seating area there and keeping the table near the house.
