How do I update my 1959 ranch to make it MODERN?
Comments (17)HI -- Great potential here . I would dig out the front hill and make the lower level the entrance with the garage and treat the main floor sort of like the second floor . All big store front style windows or full sliders . Modern stucco or raw concrete panels with horizontal cedar wood accent sections . Black frame loft style windows for the real modern style . Retaining wall on the right and making a modern court yard style entrance with planters and great lighting and even a water feature . This house doesn't need to look like a ranch with a basement . It can look like a full 2 story modern house . I will try to find some examples for you ....See MoreHow do I marry cool and warm to be cohesive in home update?
Comments (4)It sounds like you're investing in a fairly substantial remodel to your home to dramatically change the materials and colors from the current cohesive (if dated) look. When you make such a dramatic change, you really need to have an overall understanding of how to bring things together so it looks like the cohesive space you're dreaming of. Some people have that skillset and others do not. If you do not feel confident that you can figure this all out yourself, I think it would be wise to hire a designer. It would be really sad if you invested a lot in a remodel only to have it turn out to lack the cohesion you desire....See MoreHow would you do a minor update to our small double-galley kitchen?
Comments (11)New countertops and backsplash is a great start. Buy a sofa table, credenza, narrow long dresser, a buffet, or an antique and paint it or keep as is for extra storage or a place to put drinks and food when entertaining. You could put the same countertop on the floating piece you decide on as well if you like. Maybe a nice runner in front of the cupboards could bring in some texture and colour, as well as switching out hardware really makes a big impact for different price points. Depending on your budget, new taps and lighting can dramatically change the atmosphere and update. Do as little or as much, every little bit will be a nice refresh. Your cupboards look to be in great shape, I think you made the right choice not to paint them. If I see another all white or grey kitchen I’m going to scream. While timeless, where is the individual personality in that? Good luck and have fun. It’s your home. Advice is good, but follow your gut....See MoreHow do I identify cabinet wood & stain color for gel stain update?
Comments (4)I see no reason, you need to do anything to the cabinets, from your pictures. They look good. Gel stain isnt as easy to use as you might think it is. Once you put it on, if you dont like it, you are pretty well stuck, at refinishing, or at least a lot of sanding and prep work to paint cabinets, that looks pretty nice to begin with ....See MoreRelated Professionals
