Backsplash or no backsplash?
Comments (7)LOOOVE what you've done. That's going to be stunning. I have a small pass through that I created where there was a door and went through this same argument with myself. In the end, I stayed with the flat counter and now that the top has been installed I can tell I'm going to love the extra deep space. My situation is quite different though. It's where I plan to do baking things, and while mine is next to the dining room it doesn't overlook it. It will also serve as a landing zone for things going in/out to the back patio. I'm assuming the DR will have a casual feel and get daily use. Are there views into here from other rooms of the house? I was going to say "flat counter" since it appears you want the two rooms to really function as one. But given that the sink is there I think I would go for the raised counter. You don't want to be splashing into the DR. Tough call....See MoreLooking for backsplash ideas
Comments (27)You can love teal today and get tired of it in 5 years. You don't want to have the desire to change something that fixed in 5 years. Save the teal accents for things that can be easily brought in and changed later. Fun accents will bring a smile to your face just as readily. Since your counter is fairly busy you really need to rest your eye a bit by going with a solid color backsplash. I'd go light to contrast the cabinets and so that the pops of teal accents you place against it really shine. I think an updated subway tile in a non- traditional size such as 2x6 or 4x8 would give you the slightly offbeat look you want. You probably just need to match the color to one of the lighter tones in your counter material. Bring some pieces home and you'll find the one that gives your eye the most pleasure. Be sure you have a nice teal accent item so you can't see how it plays into the mix....See MoreThoughts on my flooring and backsplash ideas?
Comments (1)Hi, I've always loved that style of pottery--it's lovely! Have you considered a honed slate? We really liked the Andhra Blue--there is variation in the colors, but a bit more subtle than the picture above. The colors range from grayish-blues to grayish greens. It looks good with a dark grout, and has a very natural look. There are some pics on this website of a few different slates/quartzites available. As for backsplashes, I'm in the same boat. We're using the slate in our bathrooms with a white pebble border/backsplash. Don't think pebbles would work in the kitchen. Maybe a combo of metal and different shades of blue glass tiles? (to pick up on the different blues you have between your pottery and cobalt glass) Good luck--it is truly overwhelming, because there are so many beautiful things out there to choose! Here is a link that might be useful: Slate pics...See MoreNeed help choosing backsplash for soapstone counters/oak cabs
Comments (32)I was looking at this website about choosing a color scheme. According to this, my kitchen has a split complementary color scheme. My wall color is blue. The complement is orange. The split complementaries are yellow-orange (my cabinets) and red-orange (my Brazilian cherry floors). I also have a good dose of neutrals with my appliances and light fixtures and gray countertops. In addition, my walls are a grayed blue to tone down the blue, allowing the split complementaries to shine. My stone does not read as "green" as the previous picture of the Frank Lloyd Wright kitchen. I'm really not fond of the monochromatic color scheme currently popular. My kitchen is a lively place and the bold color scheme fits it well. I am confused as to why others feel the colors are fighting with one another? Regardless, finding a suitable backsplash is proving to be a challenge....See MoreRelated Professionals
