The swing of the french doors will require room. If you are looking to increase wall space (and perhaps reduce TV noise), consider reducing the opening and installing double pocket doors (glass or solid).

I would not add French doors to start off and see how it works for you. If you feel like you really need it you can always add it later.

I don’t think you’ll use this room for TV as much as you think you will. We tend to use a less formal, cozier setting more frequently than formal etc.

The single entry opening leads to small hallway into the kitchen.

We were thinking glass french doors would help with lighting so to not darken the room or foyer in any way. . Opposite this doorway

In our previous house we used the formal living room as a TV room. It was in the same location as your DR but had no side door to the kitchen. We had a similar large cased opening and left it just as it was.

We had a larger family room open to the kitchen, but it would have driven me crazy to have my DH watching weekend sports all day in the open space I also spent time in. Having the large TV in the living room was a good compromise.

If you want more light in the home, get rid of the solid double doors and do a single solid door with two large sidelites.

We do have plans to do double doors with windows in place of the solid doors in the entryway. One of my first thoughts upon touring the home. Beautiful doors, but I want to see out front!

Sounds like we should move in and start using the room before adding French doors. Who knows, maybe we will end up using it as a dining room at some ?? Thus my idea of French doors- I thought they would still lend themselves to a formal dining room if needed.

This plan show a modest sofa that 88" long. It will be tight unless the furniture size is scaled down, and who wants that in a TV room.

Move in and use the space first. See if the sound travel bothers you or not. I imagined a set up like Bev posted. No matter what, have any doors open to the hallway, not into the room.

Beverly, this is one setup I have thought of. Also considered putting one chair on either side of the coffee table. Another idea is to put the couch where you have the tv placed and put the tv on the small wall next to the small doorway

As I mentioned the sofa in the drawing is only 88" long. You'll be hard pressed to find lounge chairs smaller than 36" in depth. 35" + 35"+ 88" = 158" That leaves 10 inches of space between the seating and the wall. Do you plan to hurdle over the back of the sofa to get in?

Yes French doors will always be an asset no matter how you use this space but how you plan to accomplish that without shrinking the opening is the question. I agree TV viewing rooms tend to be the most casual, most used, most untidy room in a home. I would want it camouflaged a bit with some pretty doors.

Suggest holding off on your decision until room is set up/used for a bit. If you decide you want doors, consider sliders or pocket doors so you don’t have to account for the swing.

Many older homes especially here in the south have parlors off a wide central hallway very similar to your situation. Almost all of those have wide double pocket doors. That's what I would suggest for your home.

If you pick a sofa style that doesn't have bulky arm that is still a good sized sofa. My family room sofas are 84" long and plenty big to sit 3 people comfortably at a party or 2 for lounging with feet up on sofa. Depth of sofa will matter more to get the "lounging" feeling.

I have a large family room space with two of the 84" sofas and never thought they were "modest" in size!

I'm usually not a fan of sectional, but we used one in our formal LR used as TV room in our previous house.
