Porcelain Tile & Slat Wall Fireplace Makeover

Hi, I’m looking to enhance the look of my fireplace and would love some design input. I plan to paint all the walls in Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams, with the ceiling in white for a clean contrast.

We’ve decided not to mount a TV above the fireplace, as the space limits the size we’d like. Instead, I want to make the fireplace a focal point. I’m considering adding porcelain tiles behind the fireplace and incorporating a vertical slat (straight line) wood paneling design in the recessed niche on the right.

However, I’m unsure about the side walls of the niche — should the porcelain tiles wrap around them for a more cohesive look, or should I leave them painted? I used ChatGPT to generate a visual mock-up of my idea, which I’m attaching for reference. Chatgpt has removed the hearth below the vertical slat which is incorrect.

Also, I’d love thoughts on the hearth color — should it remain neutral or be updated to something bolder? And would black porcelain tiles above the fireplace provide a nice contrast or feel too heavy?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
