Electrical Wiring Design Dilemma Bathrooms

I have an older home 70 ish. I recently had my bathroom remodeled and added a fan. The problem is that the one switch works the outlet, the vanilty light and the fan. although this was verbally discussed with the contractor when I hired him, he subbed the job, and the electrical did not get separated. Is there a way to put the fan on a different switch so it does not have to run all the time?

I kind of like the fact they all come on so not one ever forgets to turn the fan on when having a shower in fact I like the fan to run longer if anything. It required some electrical work to do what you wanted and verbal directions to anyone are never what needs to be done all need to be in writing so now you have no proof you disussed this so any change will be on you . I guess it will depend on how important this is to you.

Yes, the fan can be wired to be on a different switch. I use timers for fans.

I suggest hiring an electrian.

We have had a panasonic in our guest bath for about 5 years and absolutely love it, it is very quiet and works great. We are remodeling our master bath and got the same panasonic for it, but with a built in heater. I honestly don't care how it looks as long as it works, and I don't really consider it unattractive.

IMHO it is advantageous to have the fan and light operate independently. It is often desireable to have the fan run for a while afterwards (especially after eating beans) and that way you avoid having to leave the light on also. They have great electronic fan timer switches with preset time buttons (5-10-20-30 or 10-20-30-60 minutes) that are ideal for toilet fans (otherwise known in the trades as fart fans). In order to have separate switches you will need to run an additional switch wire, however, if you are going to add a wall to enclose the toilet, it's pretty simple to run the wiring at that time. Most fan light combos have the ability to operate separately. It's also pretty easy to drop in a recessed can light and have a fan only unit.

Is there an LED replacement bulb for this?

Yes. See the link I provided above - you can either buy in bulk or in small quantities (1 - 2). These bulbs are arrays of small LED elements (3528 or 3514 chips) arranged around a cylinder. Yes, the lights are bright, but the lifespan is questionable. It wouldn't be too long before the major players - Philips, Osram, Cree start making LED bulbs with different form factors and connectors other than the E26 or GU24 base.

now my question about the pry answer. what doees the mean/ if ok with 20amp overload pretection? it means if the manufacturer of the light says to protect it with a maximum 15A OCPD, then you cannot put it on a 20A circuit. as far as simplifying answers, they have been dumbed down drastically already. if you cannot understand a particular response, ask for clarification. if you still cannot understand, then it is best to let a pro handle the job. fooling with electricity is not for everyone, no shame in that.

Have you looked inside the switch's electrical box to see how the wires and switch are connected? I can understand wiring the light and fan together but adding the outlet seems odd. Check if there are any more wires than shown here:

If the outlet is switched, then the person who did it cannot possibly be a licensed electrician. The contractor should fix this. The verbal discussion about the light/fan separation needs another discussion with them on why it was not followed, that may be a little murkier for resolution, it can be separated, it's a matter of if it's costing somebody.
