shower water dams

Looking for practical experience with a “water dam” on a shower pan. Concept is to add the water dam to the shower pan so a shower curtain could be used (instead of glass door) to keep the water in the shower. Builder and designer are both saying we need a glass door and that the water dam won’t keep water from being all over the floor outside the shower. Do they work?

For our guest bedrooms, I just kinda like the look of a shower curtain.

You really want to step over that every time getting in or out of your shower? Is the floor pitched properly for a zero entry shower (if not there is bound to be other issues)?

That seems like it would be a tripping hazzard. I’m picturing the shower curtain hanging over that and someone going to get out of the shower not realizing that small dam is there espeically since it is a guest bathroom.

I think you need to find an engineering or construction site. Dam building is a special endeavor, you are impounding a lot of water, and failure can be a downstream disaster. Before that you need to find out if your plan is legal, if it requires permits. Having "shares" makes it sound like regulated water.

Cary, you can get water from the creek/stream located on your property and pump it to the top to feed your MAN MADE pond using a RAM pump. Very simple and effective without electricity and able to move water 100's of feet up hill so you wouldn't need to even damn up your lower pond. Just look on youtube for ram pump, or passive pump for the details. About Laws.....Unless anyone here has pulled up the laws of NJ on lakes,streams, water sheds, and man made ditches anything said is speculation. Here in my home state of MN we have lots of water with different rules applying to each body of water based on its classification, and even the environmental lakes don't restrict pumping out water to use unless it exceeds a specific volume per minute. I have a MAN MADE ditch dug over a 100 yrs ago on my property and has a total of 120 miles of ditch in my watershed district. I've read the laws, attended the county watershed meetings and nothing, I mean nothing prevents me from pumping out water to use. The only state law which applies to my ditch states the county has a 16.5' easement on both sides for maintenance. Read the N.J. legislative statutes on the subject, and then the county rules before jumping to conclusions that you can't do something.

@avaaustin The process of attaching fiberglass mesh to ceramic/porcelain tile differs from natural stone processing. Mesh on the back of ceramic mosaic usually doesn't have a layer of glue between the mesh "cells". At same time, the main reason of "resin backing" attached to natural stone is to reinforce it and fiberglass mesh is attached using a "glue" that is mostly polyester. It, first, adds an impervious layer to the back of stone and can significantly reduce the evaporation. Secondly, there could be problems with how well the bond is between the mesh and the substrate since dry set or polymer-modified mortars don't adhere to it very well. True porcelain tiles, whether sealed or unsealed, have >0.5% water absorption. At same time, marble is a translucent stone that will still absorb moisture as vapor even after an impregnating sealer is applied. I can't tell you whether Bulletproof sealer will help you in your situation. With properly installed water-in, water-out system and stone with no "resin backing" it is best to avoid any sealer. That's my strong opinion. Sealing the stone but not sealing the grout will not make any difference. Impregnating sealers are all considered permeable but if there is trapped moisture under the stone unsealed grout won't help.

As you are aware, some ice damming occurs naturally with the change in outside temperature and sun exposure, and sometimes the weather pattern creates lots of ice no matter the house's precautions taken. Basic IRC code calls for the ice barrier (e.g. Grace Ice & Water Shield etc) to be 36" wide on steep roofs 8:12+. For roofs with slope <8:12, it needs to be 24" minimum inside the exterior wall perimeter. So if you have an overhang longer than 12", you need another course of ice barrier. This will help with where the natural phenomenom of ice damming occurs backing up water under the shingles near the eaves. However, I suspect with excessive leaking above the ice barrier you have an attic problem and man-made phenonenom. Meaning, your ceiling plane is leaking so much heated air into the attic, that the entire higher roof is ice damming, not just at the lower expected locations where the roof is closer to the ceiling and wall. Maybe venting is not sufficient either. So I would be looking at air sealing and insulation of the ceiling plane and attic ventilation. With a hundred year old house, you should be able to see between the gaps of the roof sheathing 1x boards (unless they oversheathed existing with plywood). Look at it and poke it and you can tell if its just felt, synthetic underlay, or the required sticky waterproof membrane. Also check your gutters, backed-up gutters can exacerbate ice damming.

They are soft/rubber so I was thinking less of a tripping hazard than a firm and taller shower curb…maybe not. I mainly liked the look of a shower curtain better than glass,. Maybe the answer is it doesn’t matter if it’s a shower curtain or glass, still need a few inches of a curb to keep the water in. This is not a curbless/sloped shower - we have a shower pan as didn’t want to tile the floor and have potential water issues from second floor baths above the kitchen.

Then why do you feel you need a dam? A long enough curtain should be fine with a curb.

Just getting alternate advice from designer and builder that curb/shower curtain combo won’t keep the water in the shower.

If you have a curb then water won't run out onto the floor and I would think as long as you had a shower curtain that hangs down past the curb inside the shower it should keep water spray from getting out of the shower just like a curtain on a shower/tub combo unit.

If the curb and shower curtain won't keep the water in the shower, then the entire design is completely suspect. It likely isn't large enough to even be usable.
