My first heart thob is dead

As a teen, I was madly in love with Dr Kildare, but then I matured and put childish crushes away. They came back with a vengeance in the 80s when The Thorn Birds ran as a series. Richard Chamberlain was still my heart trob and The Thorn Birds was one of the best mini series ever. Of course, I never knew he was gay as he never came out till he was 70. He was born too soon. RIP, Richard from one of your biggests fans.

Thanks for this, Elmer. I had forgotten he could sing. God, he was beautiful. I had good taste as a teen.

Being a person of character and honor means it doesn't matter when you are born. You live according to a code of ethics not as pleases the rabble of the day. Loved Thornbirds.

I only trap rabbits, kitty. I could not possibly trap all the squirrels. Plus, both rabbits and squirrels are considered "pests" here in California, and you're not allowed to trap and release them, or you'll be fined. I do release the rabbits, but just to my own front yard. The squirrels would be impossible - I would be trapping hundreds of them. I use poison bait stations with non-through kill bait, so I won't kill a hawk, owl, coyote, my own dog, or a weasel that might eat the poisoned squirrel or rat. The only downside of using non-through kill bait is there is NO antidote. So, you must make sure your dog or small children cannot get to the bait. Patty S.

All this talk about SOH, I saw some in a nursery the other day and bought one - Ceropegia woodii. The label reads: "One of the hardiest of all basket succulents. Hearts can be grown almost anywhere indoors or outdoors, sunny or dark. Long tentrils can grow a metre or more in a season and fill a pot very fast.......... Large number of potatoes form inside the pot to store food and water so plants can live for many months without water......." So I split it in two and put them up in a tree about 2 metres above the ground. We're just in the middle of a tropical downpour at the moment, 29.2mm in the last half hour. Hope it doesn't get washed out of the tree as I didn't anchor it all that well. But I'm not going out in this to check, too much close hit lightning.

Whats wrong with my Bleeding Heart?

I put a bleeding heart in the shade under a mulberry tree in April or May. It was a luminous chartreuse green almost all summer. In the past month or so it has gradually turned yellow and now it is almost completely gone. It has all turned brown and died back except for a few very tiny leaves on one stem and that one looks like it's headed in the same direction. Is this normal? It is next to my huge elephant ears. It seems that as they got lusher, my bleeding heart got punier. Could it be the mulberry tree? I also planted a beautiful Siberian bugloss close by which thrived at first. Then quit blooming and then one day I went out and the entire plant was black and dead. All are in total shade. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Hopetheylive, sorry for your troubles. I'm emotionally invested in my plants as well. Yesterday I decided to leave one large beautiful almost dead ripe tomato on the vine for just one more day, since the birds had left them alone so far this year. This morning I checked on it and found a bird had "sampled" it. Grrrr.... We have lots of Cardinals here and when I see one of them near a tomato plant I know to go quickly looking for hornworms. Cardinals are mostly beneficial seems to me. Now if I see Mockingbirds hanging out around the tomatoes, I'm sure to find pecked fruit. Beverly, I'd love to know if the red Christmas ornament trick works. Maybe you can post later this year and let us know.

"Codes" of ethics and integrity can be variable and different from person to person. And whether it's good or bad, do vary from place to place and over time. There are no absolute, "good anywhere, anytime" standards or expectations that I ever heard of.

Oh so sad. I always had a preference for Vince Edwards as Dr. Ben Casey -- I was quite young when I learned about subdural hematomas! But loved him in Thorn Birds. But at 90, he clearly lived a good, long life.

Lily, I felt the same way, my first (huge!) crush. Over the years, I so much enjoyed his other great roles, as well. And, like you, I was so saddened this morning when I read about his passing. Still, living to 90 years old gave him one incredible life! And, I’m really glad he had his longtime mate or husband with him and was finally able to live his life as he wanted to.

As a teen I liked Dr. Kildare better than Ben Casey, thought Richard Chamberlain was cuter.

The mention of his name and/or his first big series plants this emotional song in my head. I think it's one of the more beautiful TV show themes ever composed.

His vocal version is quite good, the sound quality of this particular rendition isn't great.

Remember he was in Shogun as well. DH met him when he was ushering at the theater in Seattle during college. He said he was a nice guy and very professional.
