Stain Help Needed

last month

We are remodeling our golden oak kitchen and I am trying to figure out the stain that was used on this red oak kitchen. Any thoughts? All I know about this picture is that it has red oak wood and it was made/stained by an amish company (not sure which one). I tried calling the designer to get a stain color but she would not give out that information out of privacy for her client, which I can respect. So trying to figure this out on my own and everyones help. :)

Looks like photoshop or at least very touched up by computer to me and probably not even a real color.

Once you sand it down to bare wood try a stain with green in it to counteract the red like Varathane Aged Wheat. Testing it out on a scrap or inconspicuous place first would be best. Your inspiration pic looks great!

I can only guess at stuff from your pictures, how was this floor sanded? With what kind of machine? I do see what looks like drum marks...if that is what they are, then, no...they won't disappear when stained. If this is indeed a refinish, it looks as if not all of the previous finish material has been sanded off, but I can only guess here, as all I am looking at are your pics. I'd say let him stain a small area and look at the results. If the test area looks bad, then you know you'll have to have the floor worked until it is ready for staining. Note that stain will lighten some after drying, so the immediate result may not be what you want to judge. I hate criticizing another's work, but what I see in your pics prompts me to advise a stain test area.

not so white and stained napkins

White napkins are just a bad idea. They look good the first time you use them, then not so much. If you have already dried them in a dryer and they still have stains, you are pretty much SOL, oil sets with the heat of the dryer and will not come out. Next time presoak your napkins in detergent and use a bit of hydrogen peroxide. Peroxide gets out any stain including blood. I buy printed dark napkins, they don't show stains and stay nice looking longer.

I wouldn't paint the existing wood surrounding the fireplace. It's a lovely rich color and I would work around that. It's a shore place and your plan for white cabinets and maple floors will be a lovely cape cod beachy look. But its not the only beachy look. If you look at pics of Hawaiian decor, you will see that wood tones such as that on your fireplace are prevelant and desired. Your wood is similiar in tone to Hawaiian Koa wood, which is considered very high end. Also, you can look at pictures of British West Indies decor. Sometimes this style has a more mahogany tone than your fireplace, but sometimes its more brown. Instead of trying to change the look of the fireplace wood, perhaps you could design the room around it. Get a great accent piece of furniture (coffee table perhaps?) in a similiar wood tone. Take a look at Tommy Bahama's Island Estate collection to get some ideas. It's pricey, but you can get ideas of what to look for in less expensive brands. a nice wicker or woven rattan chair would be great. Do you have stools in the kitchen? Wicker seats on the stools would be fabulous with your white cabinets. Can't see the rest of the room, but I would do some nice woven wood, rattan, or wicker look blinds in the same brown tone as the fireplace wood. I would also use the same window treatment in the kitchen. Consider a bold art piece hanging above the fireplace to downplay the slant of the wood slats. I think a painting of one colorful thing would be really nice (as opposed to an ocean scene). Also, you can incorporate other wood frames for photos and art in your space. How about a nice grass cloth style rug. You can even find some with borders. Maybe the grass cloth or border can play on the tone of the fireplace wood. I think repetive use of the wood tone will give you a more cohesive, rich look than just painting it white to match your kitchen cabinets. If the safety railing can be removed from the fireplace (black slats with wood top in photo), that would be ideal as it is off scale and taking away from a beachy look. I have no design experience, just my take on it.

Your samples aren't anywhere close, as you obviously realize. I don't know if you can take a flake or sample of that to a custom place and have them match it or not. Maybe a floor specialist will see this and know what to suggest. It almost looks to me that the existing floor is more of a paint than a stain.

It could be rift or quarter-sawn oak. That's what is used to get around the open grain of white and red oak that turns dark when flat cut is used. If you have golden oak cabinets, they're flat cut. After you strip and sand all your surfaces front and back you'll need to possibly treat the wood with a bleaching product and then fill the open grain with light paint-like opaque stain. Ceruse. Then sand and stain. Then finish. Sand between for any grain raise. Ciranova has good products for these steps. General Finishes is another source. This'll be a significant time investment diy or prohibitive to farm out.

IKEA Vedhamn uses non open grain different species European Oak for their cabinets. 25 year warranty. Made in Hungary. About $700 for a 36" 3 drawer base cabinet.

If you choose new, you can get all wide drawer base cabinets and reconfigure your layout for better function and more current style.

Many get doors/drawers from Conestoga or Walzcraft. When I called both a few months ago they did not yet have any of their products available using any European Oak species. US cabinet makers will probably use rift cut white oak. Unfortunately, it oxidizes yellow after 5 years whereas European Oak doesn't as much.

IKEA produces in Hungary. Hallmark in Vietnam. DOCA is made in Spain.

Most of the European Oak flooring widely available comes from SE Asia using some of the 300 oak species other than NA red or white oak. Hakwood flooring is produced in Denmark.

That is really interesting.

I associate oak - in the US context - with warm and honey, tinge of orange tones, and prominent grain, on aged pieces.

E.g. a old rolltop desk in my foyer, from the time when a retiree from the railroad was given, as retirement gifts, a watch and the desk he’d worked on for his whole career. He kept his desk until he died, none of his kids wanted the old man’s furniture, I drove 200 miles to save that old railroad desk from the dumpster. It is oak, the way aged American oak looks after a hundred years of wear and use and oiling and waxing.

Based on most of the posts here, what people think oak looks like, or want it to look like, is cool, neutral brown with a hint of grayness and faint, unobtrusive grain.

Almost a Danish, modern look.

I think people shouldn’t use US oak, meaning most oak available at aeni-custom and custom cabinet shops in the US, if that’s the look they want. Surely there is a different wood, that is commonly available in the US, that looks more like the typical “I want my oak cabinets to look like this” inspo pic?
