I have a corner fireplace, and the key to successful furniture placement turned out to be turning the sofa on the diagonal, facing directly toward the fireplace, and placing two chairs against the wall to either side of the fireplace. An area rug turned diagonally to the room (parallel to sofa and hearth) pulls it all together. This might work for you. It can be arranged and rearranged in ten minutes. I recommend trying it for a week or two before deciding whether or not it works for your household. A slight variation is to turn the side chairs so their backs are not against the wall behind them, and face directly toward one another, yes with the chair corner to the wall. Of my two chairs, I have one placed each way, and no one seems to notice. If one of the easy chairs is placed diagonally to its wall, it is possible to tuck the television table behind it. The downside of this arrangement: for tv watching, one of you gets the other easy chair, and one of you gets to stretch out on the sofa at full length. (It goes without saying that the kids get the floor). Pattern-with-pattern comes in and out of fashion; one moment it is declared the Next New Thing, and another moment declared an egregious crime. I'd say go with your heart. You want to smile when you come into the room. Congratulations on your new house!

I would prefer to see actual pics of the space , a table and chairs there really make no sense at all why not a nice console table with a couple of stoold below it for seating when removing or putting on shoes or boots a piece of art on the wall to the left of the closet and a nice rug.

Oof.. this is tough. The problem with the family room is that it's not so much a room in its own right as it is a junction for all the other rooms. Due to where the bedroom doorways are and how the kitchen and foyer connect to it, you have lots of square footage taken up by pathways to get to the other rooms. I don't think either the builder's suggestion or your configuration really works - the builder's doesn't work because it's cramped and basically ignores the fireplace... that they put there. Yours doesn't work because it has furniture against the walls (a la waiting room) that require people to have to walk in front of anyone seated to get to a bedroom. I agree with above - you need to float the seating and probably eliminate a sofa and replace with some sitting chairs (which will give more flexibility).

Usually I arrange the furniture to watch TV and petty much ignore the FP, these corner FPs are so stupid I would love to strangle the idiot that decided this was ever a good idea. If you put the TV on the left wall a sofa facing the sliding door wall and 2 nice swivel chairs to watch TV then with a little turn you can still enjoy the FP if you want. I would probably do a Besta wall with the TV some display and storage to give a bit of balance in the space . This is the idea but yout wall unit would be on the left wall.
