Sea Berry (Buckthorn) in pots? Varieties?
Comments (21)Sea Buckthorn is a shrub native to northern europe (Uk, neatherlands, northern france and along the north sea coast. Probably up and down the mountain chains in europe as well. They are coastal plants that grow exceptionally well with salt spray (can tell you how cool they like it). They are nitrofying shrubs and are usually classified as a pioneer species (one that builds damaged and disturbed soil). They have massive, massive rootsystems that can spread out a good 50 or so feet from the main tree. They sucker as well. They need full sun, and start to decline in shade, which is why they dont do well in even the central states (possibly the west coast and people on the east with extreme proximity to the ocean). THey are used extensively in the prairies as shelterbelts (living wind screens), as well as wildlife habitat.] I also believe that they dont respond well to lots of pruning. Yes, one of the harvesting methods is lopping branches, but this isnt the type of cutting that pruning for size is....See MoreSea Buckthorn (Sea Berry)
Comments (21)Don't get me wrong, it's still something you might want to grow if you're a health freak like me. Eating out of hand like this guy did is for advertising only I.M.O. the same with vitamin C content, he said, one berry equal 10 oranges... Bullsh...it! A quick Google search and found the buckthorn at a very high 400 mg /100gr berries. Oranges are about at 70mg /at 100 gram fruit. Do the math...100gr berries is about two handfull for 400mg vitamin. you need to eat about 5 oranges [less then 600 gr.] So, one berry has less Vitamin C then eating one orange. I stick with my oranges..LOL...See Morebowiea volubilis "climbing onion" / "false sea onion"

Comments (9)Sea grape (Coccoloba uvifera) is quite resistant to salt. It naturalizes in colonies along the ocean. The "what to do" is to drag out the phone book, look up arborists in the yellow pages and ask several to come by and evaluate your situation. You should have done this yesterday as it sounds like a significant tree you do not want to lose. Sea grape is generally known to be disease resistant. However, there are reported problems such as anthracnose infecting them. This needs treatment. Get a professional opinion. Please post back when you have a diagnosis as this is an interesting situation....See MoreRelated Professionals
