Selecting kitchen backsplash dilemma

I am trying to select a kitchen backsplash—whether to go with glossy or matte subway tile and whether to go with a neutral color or a color ( blue-green) that goes with the veining in the countertops and island color. Countertops are glossy with a grayish undertone and blue-green veining. Cabinets are dark cherry. Island is painted blue-green. There will be undercabinet lighting. There is plenty of natural light.

The blue in your island is not a color I would have chosen to harmonize with those cherry cabinets, or the stone, honestly. If you are thinking of repeating that color with tile on the wall, I would say reconsider the neutral options.

If you are open to color correction, consider a deeper hue, and more of a teal for the island. It will pair better with the dark wood, and open you up to richer jewel tones in your backsplash tiles, whether you choose equally saturated or lighter hues.

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

I have a similar question five years later: Is the 4" matching back splash now out of style? And how long will it stay out of style? Doubt that it would be possible to get a full matching back splash 14 years after the home was built. I am considering removing the 4" back splash and going with a complementary tile or, perhaps, a colorful wallpaper. Thoughts as to how long the short back spash will stay out of style? (I'm old enough to remember bell bottoms - the first time they were in style.)

Yes...remove the 4" border. I'm not a pro but my own choice would be subway tile in a shade that blends with your cabinets. As you mentioned, the granite has color. It looks like the granite has some flecks of cream, so it seems an ivory/cream subway tile would be a good fit.

Hi, I need help with my kitchen backsplash. Its a transitional to contemporary style home currently under construction. The cabinets will be omega white uppers and smokey grey lowers. CS London Grey countertop. Here are two backsplash choices I have so far. 1) The flooring we have selected is seen in above pic. (and) 2) I am also open to other suggestions. I initially considered glass sheet, but those are not going to work well behind my cooktop. I also do not like subway tiles. Prefer minimal grout lines. The tile in the second pic- the tile would go all the way from the countertop to the bottom of the uppers- so I won't have any horizontal grout lines. I don't like the backsplash looking too busy. Do you guys have any suggestions for me? I am finding this super hard and I think my brain is fried after all the decisions making thus far! TIA.

If you can afford to use the counter material as a splash then do so. Otherwise use a muted subway tile that is matte.

The color of the island really pops against the dark cabinets. wood tone cabinets. Let the island be the focal point. A colored splash tile is going to be too hectic. (I agree that the island isn't really the right color with the dark cabinets. Any chance of painting the wood cabinets the same color as the island or the color of the countertops?)

i like the blue island..maybe the blue isnt the perfect shade but I'd work with it. look at stool coverings look at mats/ floor runners.... look at counter accessories. will pendants go in ? Given the ways to do these things, Id pick very simple white ceramic backsplash. can you put the gold fridge mat elsewhere ? Your kitchen is good looking.
