Hi I would like a new decor for this back of the couch entrance table. I don’t like that we can see back of the frames

Not sure on the shoes sitting there. Perhaps a nice basket for those by the stairs. Get 2 pouf ottomans for under sofa table if seeing sofa annoys you.

Hi, I have a living room (5.30x5.30) that I have to furnish. I only have a white chester sofa and a dark brown armchair (if it is not good in the context, I can move it to another room). My dilemma is the furniture that I will have to buy for the opposite wall, what color should it be? White or another color? I like the decor of the photo below, do you think this color is good? @Anna & @NHBabs- I was trying to say add an above window pergola...not add a window =) We definitely don't have the room for that inside. I think with Dougs design a pergola would be too much though. We can definitely do a smaller, more affordable version of that gorgeous front deck. We are experienced DIYers and can do much or all of the work ourselves and with a few changes its completely affordable. I actually have more of the pavers from our walkway that can be added to the front area to widen that landing out some, though we won't go as wide on the left side as is shown because our yard gets narrower there against the neighbors yard. We can do stone that matches our existing stone out back on the steps and instead of stone columns we can do thick wood posts with black metal caps, and the affordable black aluminum railings that we had planned anyway, which would match our new back deck perfectly. We have considered stone in the chimney at some point in the future, though it won't be next year. It won't be quite as grand as Dougs design but gives a very similar look for alot less $$. I think to the left of the door we can add a long, covered, decorative bench box for wood storage in that space. That way we have wood for a week in the winter without trudging to the fire wood shelters out back every day or so. (We have 2 wood stoves that get used alot in the winters here.) We never use our entrance unless we are going out the front door for mail, and all our friends use the back entrance as there is ample parking out there. I can see us sitting out there on the deck with a glass of wine in the shade though. Since the only visitors we get out front are deliveries and people selling stuff, we probably don't need to add anything for sheltering them lol. Still struggling with house color. Currently its a pale yellowish color my husband hates (ditto for me) and it clashes with our new stone. We were thinking maybe something more earthy in a brown/gray...meaning not just brown or gray, something with a mix of both. Or maybe a darker beige. We'd like to darken it up a bit. The shingles are a dark gray but do have a little brown/tan in them along with the black and gray. Its called Canadian Driftwood.

One other option is to put the TV on the wall beside the window. One side of the sectional would go against the wall where your drawings show the TV. That would put your lamps near a wall outlet without snaking a cord across a pathway. Of course all this depends on where the hook-ups are located if you use cable or satellite. One year I added a 12' extension to our satellite cable so I could try a different living room arrangement. I laid the cable on the floor behind the furniture. The table near the window seems to offer the best in terms of pathways and chair space. I also like your repurposed file cabinet. I painted an old metal one and use it to store my yarns and supplies since I like having something to work on while watching Hubby's TV shows.

A benefit of un-stacking the washer and dryer is that it gives you a convenient spot to sort and fold clothes, on top of the appliances. As you have it now, I don't see that you have a good place for that. It's nice not to have to do it bending down to the floor. Some good ideas here. This one looks so much like your arrangement with the window and width of the room, although if it were me I wouldn't put use those metallic boxes, but rather leave the full depth for laundry sorting etc. A room like this can be a bit more fun and less serious than a living room or kitchen e.g. if not wallpaper then a fun colour for the walls or cabinets. I love the one with the pale blue cabinets in the link above. I see you don't have a laundry tub in that room. Depending on your family's needs, it might be a good addition for muddy/messy things coming into your house. Or even a lower-placed slop sink or dog washing station. This one is just a simple shower pan. A hanging bar can go over either a high or low sink, for dripping wet things. Just throwing out ideas here. Depending on how much storage you add, the cost of storage cabinets can add up. It can even get pricey to buy fancy storage boxes for open shelving. Resale places like ReStore are one option, and paint them to your liking. Since this is not going into your kitchen you don't need to be that fussy about the quality of the paint finish. Or use open storage and put a short cafe-style curtain across each shelf to hide the contents.

It looks like you have a cord back there so I assume there are outlets; what about a pair of lamps? Or one large thing that looks nice from both sides and leaves space for people to rest their drinks? If this is right inside the door, do you need a tray or bowl to serve as a drop zone? You could also get two large baskets to hold the shoes.

Sweet family photos! Suggest you hang them on the wall going up the stairs. Then put flowers or something pretty centered on the couch table. I agree, it would be nice if the shoes can go into the closet on a shoe rack or somewhere else. Best Wishes to you and yours.

Find a new location for all those photos. Consider a picture ledge/s

Keep the items on top of the table minimal. Three main items.

BTW your TV is mounted too high in your room. Get all that junk off the top of the media cabinet.

I echo the suggestions of several advisors...move the dustcatching clutterfest of photos to the wall between the doors.
Keep the decor on the sofa table low and minimal,or replace that table with a lower legged version,so objects do not loom over sofa occupants.
If shoes need to be kept under the table,consider a couple of low baskets to somewhat contain them.
Also declutter the sideboard...again use only a couple of larger low items.
Less is more,give your eyes somewhere to rest.

Agree with above. While those photos and collections are precious to you now, find a friend or expert with an artistic eye before you start putting nails in a gallery wall. Grouping images and projects and disbursing to other areas of the house will provide more impact. Work in odd numbers, like 3 favorite photos of the kiddos in your bedroom, one great family photo on the wall in this space. Funny photos or kids projects in their rooms. To repeat, less to look at - whether clutter, shoes, throws, toys - gives each item(s) more reverence. I use a basket at each entry with a cute sign attached that says “Shoes and sandals go here. Thank You.”. To get this started you may have to offer an incentive, like a dime for each shoe you find in the basket after everyone arrives home to the owner of the shoes.

Valinta has practical advise regarding picture placement.
I have one objection...also according to feng shui...do not put pictures of people who do not ordinarily inhabit a couples bedroom into that area.Kinda creepy vibe to have "onlookers" besides yourselves in that private space.Purely psychological,but there is a subliminal effect of having representations of ,say,MIL ,in there.Haha.YMMV!(
