Help choosing a Cabinet Style Dining Room Built-ins

Im looking for suggestions for cabinet style for dining room built-ins. Plans attached. The dining room leads into a formal living room with wainscotting and dark teal grasscloth wall paper. Kitchen is next to the dining room but is not open concept. Planning to use Dutchman Doors cabinets in Finland M44 in kitchen. Should I use the same style? Also interested in what color. Kitchen will be white. center of cabinets will be floating shelves, counter will be wood and thinking wallpaper behind the shelves. Thank you for any ideas!

Is this a new build with no pictures to help us? IMO kitchen cabinets in a DR for any reason should not match the kitchen since this is a seperate space let it be seperate. I for sure would not do the uppers I never like open shelving in a kitchen and for sure not wall paper but with no idea of your style or the DR furniture hard to answer. The M44 looks like oak natural on my monitor not white painted so I need more info about that too. I understand the need for storage but I need to see your stuff and your space to advise about this for sure .In your rendering you show a lot of display cabinets what is it you need to display would also be helpful.

@Patricia Colwell Consultingthank you for your reply. i received the attached sample from our cabinet maker which is a different style from our kitchen. its not a new build. our house is pretty traditional and while I’m in California it has a very New England feel to it. Not open concept. every room is its own. the uppers will be glass doors. We need the storage for china and crystal and had a freestanding hutch before that was too small. the room is pretty small in general. adding French doors that lead put to the backyard/deck. added some inspiration so uou can see the vision. we dont have a window though. thanks!

Thanks, all, for the advice and good ideas! Lots to think about. While I know the space is not large and the table is, I am nevertheless inclined to do something. In answer to the questions, I do not think it is an option to build anything in front of the window. The space behind the chair on that side of the table would be too tight. As for storage, I need some, but not an incredible amount. In my adjacent living room, I have a mahogany breakfront (actually, a 1948 Magnavox "entertainment unit" that was in DH's grandmother's Brooklyn walk-up) and a mahogany buffet (same era but was my grandmother's). I can fit most of my china, platters, vases, etc. in the closed storage in these two pieces. In the adjacent hallway that formerly was my kitchen, I have my great-grandmother's chest for table linens. Plus lots of new kitchen and pantry/laundry cabinets. I think the dining room closed storage would mostly be for glassware, so it could be relatively shallow and would work in either a corner or non-corner set-up. In the open shelving, I would want to do a combination of nice books, pottery, art, and photos. I also like the idea of painting the back between the shelves a color other than white, although I'm not sure whether that would work with a corner cabinet. Also, I think having a single corner cabinet would not sit well with my need for symmetry! I will play around with some mock-up options and report back. In the meantime, here are two examples I found of cabinet/shelf built-ins with a window in between (and window "enlarged" thanks to panels on either side). Neither of these is quite what I would do if I didn't do corner(s), but it's similar. Here's mine. I initially wanted a fully built-in unit but because the ceiling is vaulted the framers and my DH didn't want to drop it on one end to meet the top of the cabinetry. So I went back to the drawing board and came up with this free standing unit. It butts up to a wall on each end so I kind of got the built-in look I was after. The unit is 16' long by 9' high in the center. The doors aren't attached yet (they're just leaning there for the photo)as I still need to have glass put in them and the wood shelves are being swapped out for glass ones so the light will filter all the way down each cabinet rather than lighting up just the top shelf in each one. The cabinets are custom and site finished in BM White Dove. The wood top is American Cherry and finished to match my kitchen island. Excuse the mess and the stack of MDF on the floor, we're still under construction!

I have been thinking about another idea. How about just framing in the built-ins and drywalling. Do a deeper cabinet (if needed). Buy really good quality wood doors unfinished from Conestoga or ----. Leave a descent amount of exposed drywall wall section to paint. The doors stay the cabin color-ish (inset ?) but the "wall" section color can change easily whenever you choose to remodel. The advantage is that you can stay somewhat in budget while at the same time getting a better quality door in more style choices. You can get a slightly deeper storage area. You have more options when decorating around the built-ins as the wall portion can be easily and cheaply painted. Since it is not a lot of wall you could also get away with more colors as an accent feature. Basically you have something like this at the start (couldn't find a good picture). Then, the doors can be either partial overlay or inset. Not good pictures but I hope you get the idea. EDITED To Add...I think mirrored glass doors with matching cabin wood on the frames would look very incredible in that section of the home...especially with the wall section painted a nice color. Or, just hinge mirrors for doors. Okay, I know this will break the bank but these custom live edge with or without resin inserts are very cool. Sorry for this looonnng post but I'm having a hard time coming to terms with IKEA in that area of this very cool cabin.

I agree with differentiating the dining room built-in from the kitchen cabinets in style and perhaps color. Also consider crown molding to connect the unit to the ceiling and run it around the whole room (the cabinet maker can mill the extra pieces).

Consider adding lighting and outlets next to the counter.

The built-in‘s counter can serve as a buffet or bar or dessert set-up when entertaining. As nice as the counter will look in wood, even with a marine spar varnish the counter finish will need protection when in use. Consider a stone counter that runs the entire length instead. You can get stone close to the color of the built-in if you want a subtle look. Otherwise, buy a custom pad online that you can use to protect the wood counter when in use.

Thank you @Design Fan great suggestions! Perhaps I’ll do a quartz countertop as I love tge look of marble but don’t want the stress it comes with. We are slsobredoing the kitchen and I’m having a twrrible time finding acquartzite stone for counters tgat I like. That’s a whole other discussion !

I think a lot depends on your style but now most styles do not require any need for display of china and crystal just kind of went out of fashion I guess . I have tons of china and glassware but no need to display any . I do however like storage in a DR but for me a piece of art above a nice sized buffet is much preferable to china and crystal display. I think if you want some connection to the kitchen maybe the same counter .
