Shower has no tub any ideas for inexpensive tub that drains?
Comments (3)Of course my dogs are small, so I just use an oval galvanized tub. No drain required. But you can take a similar galvanized washtub which is round and would fit in your shower. Drill a hole low on the side and mount a drain plug in it. Then you can drain almost the entire tub and tump over any remaining in the bottom before you carry the tub outdoors. Also, consider getting a plastic tote at the dollar store and do the same thing with it. Not very durable, but you can learn on it anyway. Then do something more durable the next go-round....See Moretub to shower conversion
Comments (2)You need WAY more than that. Average plumber cost on a standard bath is 4-7K. The tiler does much of what you are asking about. Not the plumber. And the tiler gets the lions share in a bath. 8-12K for floors, wet areas, and any walls. 16-20K for a hall bath total , 40/60K for a master total....See MoreAdvice on bathtub to shower conversion in NYC -- possible?
Comments (2)I converted a tub/shower combo in my high rise condominium and had to replace the drains. I don't know if this was because of the size of the drains or because of the condition of the drains but since the plumbing was original to the 1965 build I thought it better to get new stuff insofar as possible during this gut remodel. The drains needed to be accessed through my downstair neighbor's ceiling as you can visualize the common plumbing lines stack up on top of each other. It wasn't a difficult procedure but I needed access to my neighbor's apartment. If access to the drain from your neighbor is necessary, then ask your manager what the procedure is. In my building, we are permitted access but obviously have to pay for the costs of closing it up. It cost me about $1000 for my GC to open up my neighbor's ceiling and then patch and paint it again. It also cost me $2000 to have the water shut off when my plumbing was done - all of these expenses are why remodels in metropolitan areas become so pricey as it starts to add up - not to mention the regulations on working hours; the time it takes stuff to be brought up and down in the elevators - demo of my relatively small unit took about a week because everything had to be carried out - and of course you also need to make sure that all the common area floors are covered to avoid damage to the flooring :-)...See MoreShower to tub conversion on concrete slab
Comments (2)You can rent a 14" electric concrete saw that will cut about 4" deep, which might be enough to get through the slab, or you can rent a larger saw (usually gas powered) that has a larger blade. You may have to follow up with an electric demo hammer to get through more than 4", or to clean up around the saw cut. Overall it should be a straightforward job. However, you may also need tofigure out which direction the existing line goes so that you know how to best extend it to reach to the new drain location. Its sometimes better to cut out a relatively large square of concrete for access, and then fill it back in after the plumbing is redone. Cutting out a "surgical slice" to reach the new drain location starts out as a good idea, but then gets inconvenient when you realize you have very limited access and work space.
