Replace mini stair railing at top of stairs?

We are replacing all the upstairs carpet in our home and took out this tiny railing at the top of our stairs. Should we replace it? If so, any ideas if what to replace it with other than what was there? I am wondering if it is a safety hazard?

It definitely is a hazard and probably not to code.
I would put back the piece you removed

It doesn't have to be exactly the same as it was before if you don't like the style (and if there isn't more of it further down the stairs), but you do need something there.

Be sure to sell or give away that beautiful old railing and not throw it on a heap. I happen to like it. But indeed, it might look better in black. The railing you have posted instead gave me some shudders. Quite a contrary style and not one I'd welcome in my home. Way too modern for a ranch home, is what comes to my mind. If you are really going to get a new railing, I like the one Judy proposed, although I wouldn't want it in white at your place. Perhaps in black and the railing that matches the wood of the stairs? Or maybe something like this?

I understand that OP needs it to be cheap until closing because this is a lender requirement (not unusual) and if it is fixed before closing, it becomes a fixture and stays with the property even if the buyer doesn't close. CONSIDER: A solution to this would be a rehab type loan rather than the typical purchase loan. Benefit to the buyer is they don't need to resort to expensive hard money type loan as mentioned up thread. Also it gives the buyer the TIME to figure out a permanent solution. The buyer can close right away on a rehab loan. The disadvantage to a rehab loan is that the interest rate is slightly higher than your typical purchase mortgage. Something to explore.

I think it looks like a commercial staircase if you leave it, black or white. Isn't there a less expensive option? If not, then painting out the railing to black would look better. maybe once you get the wood treads in and paint the stringer black, it will look better? Doesn't look like you have a large run to do. have you priced out any of these? I just think the squared off railing looks more modern than the current one. what color stain on the treads are you doing? a natural like these? Or a warmer tone: I love this wood tone (and the thick treads) w/the black even these darker wood tones look good w/the black. do you have to have the glass? I think any of these are a nice option

Please put something there. I had unfortunate fall, almost went down the stairs in similar situation. Looking up not down when hit unexpected drop off. Code required or not do replace with something to stop a fall.

You absolutely need to replace it. Either with the previous railing or another style. If you change it, I would get a matching handrail for the wall. Or as someone else responded, you could do a wall/pony wall but that would not be my preference and I believe would be more involved.

Yes it needs to be replaced with something maybe an interesting slat wall no railing at all there since it seems your wall railing comes right to the top of the stairs
