Gap between soffit / bulkhead and cabinet
Comments (5)"fixed cabinets"-do you mean you are considering "stock sizes". No cabinet is "fixed", there are infinite ways to assemble/build/modify cabinets. With the money you are saving not removing soffit,go ahead and get the carcass sizes and minimal under soffit molding to get you the backsplash dimension and where applicable the tall pantry cabinet of exact size you want. Barker cabinets or scherrs cabinets or any local cabinet maker will construct your sizes so you are flush/have clearances for doors/the cabinets line together and no "leftover gaps" have to dealt with later. Not to say you never need a filler strip.....but work on your dimensions and go to someone who can get you your requisite sizes....See MoreKitchen with Poorly Placed Bulkhead
Comments (9)Thanks for all your responses. Sorry, I wasn't clear about buying new construction vs. buying a new house. You have confirmed my feelings on the staggered cabinets. People kept asking me "what's wrong with staggered" so I was second guessing myself. I think I'm leaning toward bringing the moulding on the range hood to the ceiling and having all the cabinets 42". My family is very tall and I can put bowls, dishes, platters I don't use often on the highest shelves :) The suspended lighting is an optional upgrade I won't be getting. As for why the bulkhead can't be removed? A question I ask myself daily. I'm assuming there is ductwork or something in there. I was told very politely that I am buying a production home not a custom home so I can't get everything I want....See MoreBulkhead Foundation Horror Story - Need your advice

Comments (31)Are you adding a light rail to the bottom of the cabinets (to hide UC lighting)? That might account for the extra inch to make the cabinets the standard 42" tall. Does the mfr or contractor offer taller pantry and fridge cabinets? Unless you are very short in stature, you could raise the upper cabinets a couple of inches, but that would affect the way they line up with the pantry and fridge cabinets. Also, if you like the style, you could raise the uppers far enough to add a 'cup shelf' under them, which would take up some of the empty space. Then you could add a trim piece between the cabinets and crown. As for the layout, if you moved the DW to the end (with return panel), then the sink, and put the range between the sink and fridge, the layout would be improved....See MoreRelated Professionals
