Thanks for the replies. You both have helped me to revisit the idea of window film -- actually new windows and then window film. I've just ordered window panels which has led to the window dilemma. Custom rods couldn't be ordered until I know the window size. My home has the original builder grade aluminum windows. Since the bank acct. is dwindling, I could just change out the living room windows for now and put film on them. Me thinks I'm talking myself into doing it the right way the first time.

I also thought about doing panels on those two windows and stacked back to the outsides. But if you ever wanted to close them, I donâÂÂt know that you would be able to do that without them hitting the rad. I think the idea of roman shades is lovely. I like the first trim the best. but I am a bit concerned that it is not quite wide enough to make any difference. I would just do it on the bottom of the shade, a couple of inches up from the edge, but I think I would consider addding a narrower grey ribbon on either side of the 1â grey, with just a little breathing space between them. Just wondering if the linen will be substantial enough to hold the roman shade pleats? Will the blackout lining make the fabric crisp enough to hold over time? In the alternative, you could leave the trim off the body of the blinds, but do a small self valance and put the trim an inch or two in from the edge of that. Great way to pull the eye up in the space, too. A very restful, pretty space.

OK, this is making me feel better. I am having a hard time making decisions lately (8-month pregnancy hormones, I think). I got a great deal on some white blinds from JCPenney ($36 for a 47" wide blind on super-duper sale) so I will try them out at least. Since they were cheap, I ordered one for the guest bedroom too to see how it looks, but I won't stress if I don't like it. Whew! Sweeby - I REALLY wanted the maple to work. I incorporated several baskets, colorful fabrics, etc, to see if that made the maple have context, but they still look weird to me. A better decorator might make them work... I will try to post a picture as soon as I get the valance finished and hung. Everything about the nursery makes me smile but the window right now.

Stencils done. Thank you K Sissy for the metallic paint suggestion. A fantastic suggestion. Dont know how clearly the pictures illustrate, but the room looks great with gold metallic paint rather than the white or monochrome that I had thought about. . The gold picks up the accents, chandelier and tones in the window treatments. I went back and forth about stencilling over chair rail or under crown molding but went for less prominent ...
