We are building a gas-vented linear fireplace. The fireplace will be below a tv (that’s our only option). It will be in our main living room, and the first thing that people see when they walk into the house as it is very close to the front door. The tv will be 65” and the fireplace will be 6ft wide. I’m all over the place with my design ideas. I know for sure that I don’t like those rocky stone surrounds (I apologize I don’t know the correct name). I also know that I don’t like the lines that I see in the surrounds made out of large porcelain tiles or small tiles. I’m pretty much thinking a marble wall surround (either on its own covering the entire wall from floor to ceiling surrounding both the fireplace and tv or combined with a wood-look panel above the fireplace, surrounding the TV). I also like various custom-built units around the fireplace and tv without any stone to them. However, most of those are usually accompanied with shelves and other built-ins on the sides, which I can’t do because I have windows on the sides adjacent to the fireplace. I don’t like too modern. I like cozy and comfortable but I do want somewhat of a wow factor as this will likely be a focal point especially given that majority of my interior is neutral colors. I’m attaching a few pictures of the layout at its current state. I purchased a travertine coffee table that will be directly across from the wall discussed. I also have a chandelier that will hang on the other side of the room above the dining table (seen in the photos). Any input would be very much appreciated. Need to make the decision asap. Thank you!

I am attaching a photo of the space with the coffee table in it. The fp will be a black glass linear 54” with canon balls inside. For the surround I’m debating between a beautiful marble stone or a porcelain slab. I’m attaching a few pictures of the stones that I like but I really have no idea how they will look in the space and whether they will be too busy. Any insights would be very much appreciated. If you have other suggestions or inspiration photos please share. Also if you can advise between a true marble or a porcelain slab as I’ve narrowed it down to these two materials (I don’t want to see seams). Thank you!

Comments (14)When my daughter bought her house there was no mantle above the fireplace. We found a metal shelf/mantel at a small home decor shop. I think the shelf is made of tin. It was reasonably priced. It is not heavy but it is sturdy enough to hold whatever decorations she puts up there. Here's how it looks decorated for my grandaughter's birthday. Comments (16)oh, I didn't see the TV plan. I get why you want to move it, it's not central enough for your couch. but if you want to put it above the fireplace, it'll be too high (as in, bad for your neck). since you dislike the hearth, then rip it all out and install a floor level FP with a really flat hearth (or no hearth) and no mantle. put the TV above it. PS: you can only mount a TV above a gas FP, unless you plan on never burning wood in there. the heat from wood burning is really bad for electronics. also don't do stacked stone. it's pretty much out of style already (sorry!). not quite sure what else to suggest, I'm not much of a traditional person. maybe tile? picture this: see how this FP is low enough to have a TV above it, and is tiled: now picture that design, but with dark wood and darker tile: Sorry I can't find an inspiration photo that illustrates what I'm thinking. kind of like this, but with no mantle and a TV above it, and built in bookcases on either side:...See MoreRelated Professionals

You don't like modern but everything about your house kind of looks modern to me.
Here is what we did. Our fireplace is electric, so it doesn't kick out a ton of heat (and the great aspect can be turned off), but there were still set back requirements which is why we pulled the fireplace forward with respect to the front of the TV.
Black acoustic paneling with walnut butcherblock top. This is our basement so we're going for more dramatic look but this labeling comes in a lot it different styles, and can also be painted. Our TV is 85" and fireplace is 100".
