Living Room Chandelier Size Guide

Please help!

Living Room Dimensions 16.2 x 15.2" but extends fully open to the next room. There are two short wing walls that define the space as well as a centered fireplace.

High Ceilings 11'

Large Arched Window (no drapery) 80" wide (floor to almost ceiling)

I include the window info b/c it opens to the front of the house and I'd like to make a statement. It's glass, four tiers, so is substantial, but also don't want it to be flashy.

The sales person tells me I need the 48" (actual dimensions 49" wide x 34" high) but If I were to use the "rule of adding room width x length" I would think I could go with the 36" (actual dimensions 37" wide x 27" high.

It is expensive and I don't want to make a mistake or have to return and pay restocking fees.

Just make sure that if a human walks under it, they won't konk their head. And if it generates alot of heat, hang it higher than what the 'rule' is -sitting under a heat lamp is not fun, unless it's snowing. ***** "The bottom of a chandelier over a dining table or kitchen island should hang 30 to 32 inches above the top of the table or island. With a 9’ ceiling you need about 7’ under chandelier for clearance if heads. Unless, it hangs over a coffee table. That leaves 24” total for your fixture. With a few links of chain you probably have to find something that is about 18” high.

Oh, good. I'm glad you have another option. 28" sounds about right for the size of your room and it's a little over 75% of your table size - so that's good - in terms of a general guide line. However, sometimes you have to eyeball it in room. Be sure the retailer you choose has a good return policy. If you're up for a mock-up execise, you can cut card board to a couple different sizes and see which looks best to you. Another one I think would work well for you is the Oly Pipa Bowl Chandelier. It's very pretty.

I have the same type room with sloped ceiling and I can’t picture the fixture looking right anywhere but the center. My fan is about 12” from the ceiling and that looks right to me. To be clear , the extender bar is 12”-14”.

I thought of that but honestly the space is changing so much from what it is now, that it’s not really an accurate representation. I guess I could wait to get the chandelier in last? I will have to add additional support for it anyway so it’s a project (and one that I want to do while my husband is out of town-ha!) lol

Here’s the room. We’re getting new rug, two sofas, coffee tables and side table.
The stone fireplace will either be stuccoed (smooth) or wainscoting to match the entry. I can’t stand that the mantle is so high so it has to be changed.

Lighting is all about levels for differnt needs I happen to like the one thta is there but that and the pot lights are not all you need . They are great for some ambiant light but floor lamps , table lamps all have arole in good lighting. I would never hang that light in that space it looks like a DR or staircase light . I think the chandelier needs to be chosen after you deside what you are doing style wise in the house . I will say painted or stuccoed stone is never a good look and if that is wood burning never done. I do not think a mantel belongs on that FP at all so someone added that at some time . Post pics of all the new things going into this space then we can help with the light .Size of the piece is only part of the puzzle so many things need to be considered and if seen with other llighting those also need to be in the picture

Suggest waiting until the room is furnished, as its layout and feel will define the light’s style, height, and size. The chandelier you show is quite formal, so be sure to look at inspiration pictures of rooms you are aiming for/suit your furniture. If interested look for an on line room planner and test the two couches and other configurations as there could be better choices.

If you interested, provide its dimensions and structural components (doorways, etc) and how room will be used and you’ll get helpful advice.

I can see a Venetian plaster finish on the fireplace; it’s classic, yet modern, light and suits many looks (you may have to address the firebox).

Thank you all! I have the rug, coffee table and sofas on order, so once I get those in place I'll be ordering the side tables and lamps. I will then post another question and try to get input. I think you all are right, it's best to wait for that kind of decision until I have the other pieces in place.

@Maureen - that is exactly the look I'm going for/had saved some photos similar. Thank you! Because the mantel is built into the stone I have to cover it fully, plus I think the stone itself is too random to do a limewash or other semi opaque coverage. There is trim along the ceiling so trying to sync up to it would be difficult and not come out right.

How big is the fixture that's there? What is the spacing between those speakers?

Since you have the slopes in the ceiling, I think I would lean towards the 3 ft wide one.
