Do I need primer/how many coats of paint for this?

I'll post a photo as a reply.

This is a deep color that I am afraid will show through. It will be repainted a light beige. When I paint just one room, even with a much lighter color than this, I do a coat of primer and two coats of paint.

I will have a painter do this since it's much larger area (basically everything except the bedrooms). Is the primer overkill or should I have it done since it's a deep color now. Thanks!

I would prime over that. Either case you will need 3 coats ...

1) primer + 2 paint

2) no primer +3 paint.

Your labor cost is the same and primer is cheaper than good quality paint.

This depends on if the paint is washable or flat. If it is flat, then full color coverage is the only thing that matters...if it covers in one coat, then you are done. For a washable paint, the best system is always one coat primer and two coats finish, but the 'standard' is probably just two coats finish with no primer. If your painter did not make a recommendation, then I would be asking why not? A true pro should have recommendations. It is their job to educate the customer.

I just went to the BM store and the guy said if I am using Aura (which I am) to paint, then I don't need any primer at all. "Even on new sheetrock?" So they say. I've used Aura without primer on previously-painted walls, no problem. But can anyone attest to it's performance over bare drywall? It would sure save me a lot of time and $$ to stop priming now. I'm only 3 gallons and one day into it.

You should really apply poly to the sample to get a true read of the finished look. As soon as I apply stain, it’s darker initially but the stain will lighten a bit after it is dry. Then when you apply poly, the stain will darken just a bit. Plus, the poly itself is not completely clear. It usually has a slight amber hue depending on the brand. Also, applying the poly enhances the wood making it look richer.

Use a good quality primer, your painter should know of a good one. Trust his advice.

Defintely have him put one coat of primer on it, and like millworkman above says, make sure you use a quality primer. 2 coats of paint (also good quality), over the primer.
