Flooring Bathrooms Design Dilemma

Porcelain tile to coordinate with Calacatta gold

We recently renovated our master bath. we put 12x24 calcatta gold on yhe floor, unfortunately it has cracked and we need to replace the floor. the shower and shower walls will remain calcatta gold. thinking i will do porcelain on the floor to avoid cracking again. recommendations for porcelain tile/colors tgat will coordinate and not be too busy or clash? we will be reinforcing subfloor. Hesitant to do marble again, even if smaller format.

Nothing is going to "coordinate" but a plain flooring, and you need to go tile shopping locally and bring home samples..

Reinforce how? What is beneath the bath? Another living floor? A basement? Have you had a structural engineer? Did you heat the floor?Are you certain that shower is waterproof, and there is no seep to the bathroom floor?

Yes, another living floor. thr floor is heated, so it will likely get ruined when they rip up the marble. shower is waterproof. crack is due to seam in plywood of subfloor which shouldve had another layer.

Socal sister, I'm looking at the invoice (the tile sample itself doesn't say much), and it says 8" x 16" Serena Calacatta Wall (also I got the 2" x 8" Bullnoses). The item number says AZ816SERCAL. It was $3.95 a square foot. Like I said it's gorgeous. If you can't find it using my description, feel free to call the tile place I purchased it from, and I'm sure they'll be able to help you. it's hard to say from pics. i looked at some porcelain calcatta last week---it was called evolution, i think. it looked pretty good...especially the honed!! the polished looked abit more "fake"...not nearly as dimensional as real marble. the pricing on that was more like 11 or 12$/sq foot tho... $3.89/ft is really cheap if you like the look! my opinion tho is you might want to go with subways or something different in the shower, just so it wouldn't so much of that look....especially if it's polished--- i'm basing that opinion on the evolution tiles i saw in person.

Thank you, elphalba and jacqueline5! I actually found a nice Calacatta matte porcelain tile made by Mission Stone & Tile in Chattanooga (see link below). If I think it's worth the hassle to have it delivered (it's only about 15 square feet), I will--"though my contractor and boyfriend are having a cow over this! As it's good enough for Gwyneth Paltrow... Well, we'll see! I'll report back. Otherwise, my search will continue for a matte porcelain Calacatta floor. I'm considering using the mosaic of the polished porcelain Calacatta, which isn't bad. But I'm worried it may be too busy. BTW, I had my heart set on a porcelain Calacatta mosaic with a honed finish. But from what I'm reading, honed on the floor can be just as slippery as polished. Anyway, thanks again. Will keep you posted. The floor cracked from the heat, I would guess, turned on too soon following install of the marble. I doubt a seam in plywood would cause cracking, a sagging joist and a floor with movement would.

It's more likely the heat in combination with the marble. I'd wait at least a full month.......a lesson already learned by client who did not heed the advice

Thoughts on what to replave with? white porcelain? 12x24?

I would consider doing a floor in a more solid looking gray toned that matches the over all veining of the wall. It will look intentional against the shower walls and the tub.

I would go more gray than white.....all white? That will never be as forgiving, and will be harder to find as well. You're used to a lot of pattern which disguises quite a bit: ) of daily grunge.

PS..... what size was the former? that might be part of the crack issue as well.

I do not think the heat was the issue but you need to have avery solid subfloor with no flex to install 12 x24 tile and for sure marble . Get a nice 12 x24 plain porcealin tile that is a match to one of the colors in the marble and a matching grout .

Unless it is the SAME marble, you still need a plain. Even a smaller format in what you have, is no guarantee of a similar look when you reduce size. You'd need what is currently available from Mother Earth and major sampling on site with a few full boxes.

In one of my bathrooms I used a "calacatta gold" porcelain on the shower walls, but used a complementary linen-look tile on the shower and bathroom floors.

Visit every independently owned tile shop within a 40 mile radius and you will find something that works!
