Help with sofa or console table!
Hello! I am working on building out a new living room space. I am looking for a long sofa or console table to add behind the grey couch. I'd like it to look as simple and clean as possible so that it doesn't get too busy with the built in shelving by the tv area. Please help! Should the sofa/console table be white, black, wood and/or what color of wood?! Any particular ones you suggest? Thank you!!

Comments (24)Bookcases are up! Or, at least two of them are ☺️ I ordered three, which would exactly fill this wall. But now I’m thinking maybe two is better: if I want the sofa centered on the fireplace (which I’m pretty sure I do), then the third might make the walkway from the living to the dining part of the room feel pinched. What do you think? I have lots of great art waiting to be hung, and I’m thinking maybe using the space on either side of the shelves for a painting or two, rather than adding the third set of shelves? Please excuse the messy table 😆 I‘d also be grateful for any thoughts about the styling — I put this together late at night, with lots of sentimental treasure that have been hanging out in inappropriate places around the house. I have other spots to display things, though, so if anything is out of place, it can be relocated (except for the baskets — there’s one of those for each of my kids for homeschool work; they like to work in the dining room lately, and I’m happy to give them space as long as everything goes back in the basket when they’re done). Think about getting a modern raw edge custom made sofa table/tables. Multiple Etsy woodworkers offer choice of size, legs. etc. for reasonable prices. Watch out for delivery chargres, though. Maybe you have local woodworkers who could do this custom. Match wood to floor or to shelves by the fireplace.

last monthlast modified: last monthAs it’s going to be one of the first things you notice, I’d choose something with simple lines (no shelving to avoid clutter) and just add a few impactful items. Color and content is really a preference.
Some black will tie into the fireplace.
a natural wood tone would be nice with sectional and floor
lighter will complement the cabinets
Consider your plans for the coffee table and furniture you’ll be placing on the large wall, as it’s important to think big picture and create a connection.- last month

Really large art, a substantial clay pot and plant, and try your chair and lamp where mirror/chest is, as they feel awkward where they are. It’s a lovely room and once you complete, even more so.
