Dining Chair Redo

While these dining chairs are very comfortable and are custom upholstered, they have served their purpose for over 20 years! I could remove the integral seat and have the chair striped and re-stained or painted but I imagine that could cost more then to replace them?

Our new dining room table has a travertine top (came with the house to heavy to move) and

a black metal base. I prefer an armless chair that isn't heavy to move, is easy to clean, and comfortable. I know your keen eye and knowledge will lead me to a great style, color and well reviewed chair that will enhance our new kitchen/dining room.

I just re-did an old dining table and chairs. I figured I had nothing to lose since they were either going to look better or it was going to the dump. I'm SO glad we refinished it. I found a fabric that incorporated my colors at the store, ignoring anything except the fact that it had all of my colors in it, then we washed and very lightly sanded the chairs so that they would take spray paint. Two light coats covered the old ugly white. A friend used his sander VERY lightly on the top of the table, since it is actually a veneer, then I stained and polyurethaned the table top and sides. The finished product: I believe that wood is wood is wood, so I don't care if one wood doesn't match another. If that is a problem for you, then use a tablecloth over the top that goes with your other decor.

I fell in love with the fabric, but I originally was looking for something with blue in it but wasn't finding anything that excited me. I kept coming back to this one, even though the scale of the pattern caused me to think it would be too large for small dining seats. But then I figured 'what the heck'. I didn't try to center the pattern (that would have cost a fortune for enough yardage to do it that way). I bought 3 yards, and had enough left over to make two small accent cushions for the living room. no-green-thumb, yes, the chairs are very sturdy. Other than some gummy residue on the arms of the captains chair, and a little on the upper backs, they needed only a wipedown with the Restore-a-finish. The whole project took very little time, and within the week from bringing it home, it was all done and sitting in our dining room. Re Lee Valley, I agree! It's a fabulous place that has quality products, and a lot of things they carry you cannot find anywhere else. It is so nice to browse through the store, and I particularly love the garden product section! Their staff is very knowledgeable and take the time to answer questions. The gentleman that served us took about a half hour to tell us how to acheive the glossy finish I wanted, didn't try to sell us products we didn't need. We walked out with a package of sanding disks and a confidence that we could follow his directions and get the results with the tabletop that we hoped for.

This post helped me in my decision for my dinette set. Thanks Mag. You made some really good points. I couldn't decide for 4 years. I ended up picking something very similar to what you mocked up here. What you said about contrasts helped me conclude that I needed a shape very similar to what you drew. I was going for Parsons, but they would have been yet another rectangle in my space. I was also able to convince DH that a plywood seat would have enough flex to be comfortable, so he was set up for a win when he sat in the chair to try it out. Because I have very dark floors I went with a honey color chaiir. My elements are very similar to the OP's. Metal bar stools, and amber /orange pendants. Dark cabinets and floors. Hello!! Alicate - the shade is white white (not ivory or beige). Some of the pics above have the light turned on. When it is on, it has an awesome glow about it. dd50 - we tried taking the orange pendants down and replaced them with the original white ones. It was just blah, we put the orange pendants back up. I do intend to replace them with a nicer pendant soon, but it will also be orange! loribee - no, it is a complete replacement. We looked at a lot of drums, the one we bought was the first one that we took off the list! Simply because it was a little pricey. I just couldn't justify spending x amount of dollars for a shade! However, this one fit all of our criteria, so we got it. It is a really nice fixture, has a glass difuser in the bottom, it glows when it is on, and has a really nice presence otherwise. it was worth the money we paid for it! Elaine

I always prefer if made in the US as I find the quality is generally better but not limited. My budget is $200-$200 per chair. Thank you.

I do have one last question. I may be able to strip my current dining room chairs for a reasonable cost. If so, would you keep them along with the upholstery or change it out? Then, what color stain and color of upholstery to give the new look some character? Thank you.

I'd choose the light wood (natural oak) to contrast your existing floor color.

as for the upholstery, it's personal... for me the Navy blue option, you have a rich blue in both pieces of art.

I would choose an all leather chair no legs showing metal at all and IMO a color form which ever art you will hang there maybe teal since that would go with each art piece

The style of the light wood chairs in the photos, below, complement the table better than your current chairs even if refinished.

Agree that a rich teal upholstery will look great with the woods and art already in the room.

Lantern Visual - Yours and the other wonderful people who commented were spot on. This guidance lead me to the perfect chair both in size, shape and scale that compliments my travertine table perfectly. I went with this fabulous chair covered in a beautiful boucle gray fabric and flat black powder coated metal structure.

I was able to bring it home for a trial run and fell in love. The look and comfort is wonderful. So excited that in 8 weeks time I will be able to enjoy the new look that will enhance our dining pleasure.
