Design Dilemma Windows living room

Front Door Debacle

Hey all! So my front door opens right in the middle of my living room and has made space planning very difficult. I’ve been thinking of switching the front door with the window on the right in the picture. I’m not sure if it would look awkward having two windows so close to eachother so now my thought is to “merge” the two windows to make one large window. Thoughts? Any idea the general cost difference between the two options?

I think function is the first step if the door opening on the right makes sense inside as long as the windows match perfectly it will look fine I would however dithch the shutters and maybe think about a nicer colored front door to bring attention to it

Have you considered an outswing door? With a covered porch and the wide open flat area, it would meet the required specs.

IMO, they are more air-tight than in-swing doors! And no storm is needed!

We have 10’ ceilings and an 8’ door. We replaced the original wood, which had warped (south facing, but covered), with fiberglass. Ours is a 3-point lock custom door from Kolbe, without glass. We originally ordered clad, but they can’t make that in a panel door. Can’t even tell you what it cost because the guy at the lumberyard is a bit of a dolt and kept changing the order after discovering various things. Anyway, it’s a great door, secure and efficient.

I love the balance the existing door brings to your space. You could perhaps work around the furniture placement issue by floating some of the furniture pieces, rather than having them all along the walls. If you post pics we could help.

I hope the walkway planned is at least 4’ wide. With a white house, I think you could really play with a front door color. You need a landscaping plan and the plants can echo the door color.

All the same color because it's essentially one in the same element. In other words, you can have a door with no side lights but you can't have side lights without a door. That's why it doesn't make sense to paint the side lights a different color from the door.

Yes, it is do able. I would rethink the porch design in the process. remove the shutters, the railing could be redesigned to compliment the change in door location.

The header(s) for the door/windows should already be in place so the labor costs wouldn't be as much as starting from scratch.

Does budge allow for new door AND new windows or will you try to re use everything?

Moving doors and or reframing windows will not be inexpensive. Siding would need to come off the entire porch as well as most all the interior drywall. Wall reframed with new rough openings and headers. Then reinstall the siding and interior drywall and trim.

@lyn Nelson, I can replace the door. Windows are looking pretty out of budget though. Just for poops and giggles though, what would you change on the windows
