white vinyl or stainless steel sink grid for shaw farmhouse sink?
Comments (5)My Shaws sink is 10 years old. I had the white grid for about 8 years. Some of the white material starting coming off and it starting rusting in those spots. It did show discoloration. I used bleach about once a month (very dilute) in the sink and that cleaned it up pretty well. I just recently felt it was time to replace the grid and got a new SS one from Amazon. I thought the SS would solve all of the problems. It still gets "gunky" at the intersections. A blackish gunk. So it has to be cleaned frequently as well. The alternative is no grid which is not a good alternative. I didn't have a grid for the first couple years and the bottom of the sink got a few chips. White looks better imho. As far as wear and care...its six of one and half dozen of another....See MoreRuvati RVC2384 Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink and Stainless Steel Faucet
Comments (6)I have the Ruvati single bowl sink. Pros: It's big and holds a lot of dishes. It's sturdy and insulated well enough for me. I like the ledge for accessories. Cons: It has a flat bottom, so I chase food around the sink with the sprayer trying to get food particles down the drain. It has tight corners and hard to clean. The colander has wood, so I'm not sure how long that will last and it has large holes and is open on each end. That prevents you from using it for anything small, like straining spaghetti. I suppose you could use it for larger cut vegetables. I personally have it on the ledge and use it to set my liquid soap bottle, scrubbies and to hang my dishcloth to dry on the edge. I sometimes rinse my flatware and place in there prior to loading the dishwasher. I bought an after market, fine mesh colander that expands to fit the ledge and I store it in my cabinets. The grid for the bottom of the sink I thought was a good idea when I bought the sink. I hate it. The space between grids is too large to prevent anything from falling through. It gets food gunk on it, so I would be constantly scrubbing it and have to take it out to clean the sink. I don't use it anymore. If I could have a do-over, I would not purchase it again. You spend a lot of time at the sink, so allow enough in your budget to get a sink that will make using it less of a chore....See MoreHas anyone chosen a white undermount sink?
Comments (16)Pattisue72's and Jhmarie's sinks are just pure eye candy. Love them. I have a stainless steel sink. It's fine. It is a thicker SS gauge which IMHO is important. It is very utilitarian and will last forever. It shows water marks but I can't stress over stuff like that. Stainless steel sinks are likely more in the OP's budget. If s/he decides on stainless steel, I recommend s/he look at the Kraus 16-gauge SS sinks. But I must say that the stainless steel is ho-hum compared to the loveliness pictured above. One of those Kohler sinks will be in my next kitchen I think. In my dim memory I thought someone said that one of the Kohler enameled cast iron sinks has walls that slope inward a lot. That makes the bottom surface much smaller. I.e., you think you have a 33" sink width, but the floor of the sink is much smaller due to the sloped walls. Can anyone tell me if this is true, and if so, which model?...See MoreCan I mix mid century modern and country in kitchen
Comments (10)Real farmhouses in the 50s and 60s had mid-century modern elements. Houses in the country in the 50s and 60s had mid-century modern elements. But..neither the farmhouse and country elements of those homes nor the mid-century modern elements of those home were, as Live_Wire pithily put it, the Disney theme versions of those design trends. If you don't go over-the-top with "farmhouse" or "country", I think it can all work together well. But when you are working without a net (an inspiration pic, in this case, of the elements you want to combine), a mood board, or even better, a real mock-up, is your friend. Putting all the elements together on paper, or on computer screen will let you see how everything works together and give you a chance to course correct....See MoreRelated Professionals
