Glass Block Windows and Cold
Comments (8)While building our home I researched the insulating value of glass block windows and finally found that (around ~2007) they were being built with an R-value of 2. Nobody was advertising an inert gas filling, as stated above, which would only add about 1 to the R-value anyway. Modern low-E windows have an R-value of 3 and higher, depending on number of glass panes, multiple low-E coatings, etc. Being a 1950' era house, the glass block windows you speak of likely had a steel frame (?) which would only lower the composite R-value from the above value, not help it. Yes, a plexiglass covering could help as each additional trapped air layer adds a nominal R-value of 1 to the system. But, if the plexiglass is on the inside, warm moist air from the interior will eventually get behind and condense on the cold glass blocks, causing cosmetic, rust, and or mold issues. The plexiglass placed on the outside to add another air layer there, as storm windows do, would be a better (and safer from condensation, mold issues, etc.) stop-gap measure, IMO. Ideally, I'd suggest changing the glass block windows to a modern vinyl or fiberglass framed low-E glass window....See MoreGlass block 'windows' with traditional marble
Comments (2)I've been reading about the glass block tiles, and it seems that they were in use well over 100 years ago. I saw some of the photos in the Italian lady's albums of old kitchens and baths, which had the ads from manufacturers with the latest stuff. I wish I could remember what her name was, to put your mind at rest. I would think that this glass block corner window setup, being in the back of your home, would not impact the street view, am I right? I'm planning to use the blocks for a shower enclosure, not a window installation, and the house is a 1948 cape style, not a Victorian lady. But I think the Victorian era was all about trying new things. In my recent bath addition, I opted for a stained glass window at the front of my tub. It gives a colored light to the room. But I also have other windows in the room, with good natural light all day long. If you need something for maximum light and privacy as well, but no view, the blocks would do the trick and look great doing it too....See MoreHow can I allow window light but block out spying eyes?!
Comments (3)I might suggest a wooden shutter that you could keep the bottom closed in our bathroom I usually keep the top completely open and the bottom closed or almost closed so that we get all the light at the top and partial light from the bottom and complete privacy. Or you could put up a heavy sheer that lets in all light but she would only be able to see image at night if your lights were on. Another idea is to call a glass company and have them etch the glass or replace your glass with etched glass....See MoreBasement glass block window
Comments (2)+1 The time and money you would spend surgically replacing one block would be better served pulling out the whole unit and replacing it in total....See MoreRelated Professionals
