Cherry vs maple vs hickory
Comments (2)In my opinion the look of the wood grain should override the hardness. With cabinetry being vertical, it isn't likely it will be dinged by falling objects like floors are. Yes, kids will hit cabinetry with toys but I still think the look of the grain and how the wood takes stain is the number one consideration. Maple has a smooth grain, takes stain evenly. Cherry grain is more pronounced and also takes stain nicely. BUT, most cherry cabinets these days include sap wood which doesn't stain the same as the heart wood. Heart wood appears redder and deeper toned while sap wood is more yellow. Hickory has lots of color variation in the wood which gives it a very distinctive appearance. Attached is an example of sap wood on a cherry cabinet. My cabinets are cherry and show this much variation on some doors and drawers....See MoreLight stained maple vs. painted maple cabinets
Comments (1)i did honey stained maple in our last kitchen (stainless appliances) but i really didn't like it at all when it was installed. the color was too close to the floor. they looked too similar. just something else to think about... good luck!...See MoreUnfinished Maple Bookcases: Paint, Lacquer, Gel Stain . . . ???
Comments (7)Gmp3 and Lazygardens-- Thank you both very much for your help. GMP3--I'm going back and forth between wanting them to look built-in, though I think that's still my preference. I was trying to save some money by finishing them myself. I've never used a sprayer so I'd probably hire someone. Any thoughts on what that might cost (I have no idea, so even an educated guess might help). Lazygardens--If I went with the natural maple (and it is very pretty, so it wouldn't break my heart to do this), do you have any recommendations for a topcoat (oil v latex/acrylic, method of application, even a brand you like) and should I apply a sealer/primer first? I know that Minwax makes aerosol cans of its polyurethene--any opinions about those? Many thanks!...See MoreWood experts--Unstained natural birch vs natural maple as far as color
Comments (9)All those cabinets JuneKnow posted look to me like they were originally stained. The color is close to a cherry look IMO. Were they natural colored originally? I know certain finishes do yellow throughout the years. An example, for floors anyway, is an oil based finish vs a water based finish. After sanding we refinished our 100 year old maple floors with oil-based finish knowing full well that the finish would cause them to yellow. In that situation our choice was based on longevity of the finish. I am just trying to get some guidance on what wood species to select if I want something that will remain a lighter color (this is a different home than the 100 year old one mentioned above)....See MoreRelated Professionals
