Ceiling Paint Advice – Stick with Wall Color or Go Different?

I’m in the process of painting the interior of my house and could use some help deciding on a ceiling color. I’m using Behr Blank Canvas (eggshell finish) for the walls and Behr Night Blooming Jasmine (semi-gloss) for the trim.

Now I’m stuck on what to do for the ceilings. All of the ceilings in the house are pretty low - does that make a difference in what I should choose? Should I use Blank Canvas on the ceiling as well, or go with something else? Also, what’s the best finish for ceilings in this situation?

Would love to hear what others have done or recommend - thanks in advance!

Why not just paint the whole room, ceiling, walls and trim all the same Behr Night Blooming Jasmine? Ceiling flat, walls eggshell, and trim semi gloss/satin.

They will reflect the light differently and look lovely and modern.

As much as I love Blank Canvas, the Night Blooming Jasmine is much fresher, and depending on your natural light, make a beautiful 'canvas' for your furnishings.

Have you tried the two paints in a room? I don't think there is enough contrast.

A soft white on the ceilings would be the way to go.

I wouldn't paint all the same color, I usually go one or two shades lighter. Even if the wall color is so light than lighening it even more makes it look white to you, it still has the same base colors as the walls but there isn't the same stark contrast you'd normally see between a darker wall color and "white". And, don't forget, lighter ceilings supposedly make them recede to the eye. In regards to the moulding, even though the room doesn't have much height, I think using a thin molding will add some interest. Even though the ceilings are 8 ft, we used a 2-3 inch coved moulding in our guest room and it looks great.

DH sprayed the Advance for all the trim and I think he mentioned it went on a bit different but he didn't have any complaints. I think he thinned it with floetrol, just like he did when we used Sherwin Williams ProClassic for our other trim. We just hired a painter to paint the trim and doors in the remaining bedrooms and 1 additional bathroom because DH doesn't have time to finish those rooms. The painter is brushing instead of spraying and he said he really likes the Advance. It looks great - not as perfect as DH's sprayed on finish but DH also takes 3 times longer to finish because he's such a perfectionist :)

Okay…paint color for North light and the upholstery is what is important. Disregard the color of the floors because a rug would be in order. This is B.M. Mirage White (SW should be able to match it, but if you have a B.M. store, go there). North light needs a lilac gray and your chair seat is perfect for this color. As for the floor, all that is needed is a hint of its color.

Can I paint the walls and trim a different white than the ceiling?

This is believed to be Navajo White walls and White Dove trim. You can always paint the ceiling after the walls and trim if it really doesn't work. No mention of the ceiling color here, but it does appear to be darker than the walls/trim. May just be the lighting. Click "More Info" to see other rooms in this house for comparison.

@Lyn Nielson That’s an interesting idea - I hadn’t thought of painting everything in Night Blooming Jasmine. I’m definitely aiming to keep things light and bright and then bringing in a lot of color through furniture and accessories. Appreciate the suggestion - definitely giving this some thought now!

@elcieg I haven’t tried the two paints together in a room yet - I actually came across the combo somewhere in the depths of the internet, so I’m not completely tied to it. Would you recommend sticking with one color throughout or going for a bit more contrast between the walls and trim? I’m really just trying to keep things light and neutral overall.

I used Night Blooming Jasmine in a bathroom. It is extremely bright. Just a warning.

Night Blooming Jasmine is bright but I used Ultra Pure White which is even brighter on all my walls and trim and it has worked out fine.
