Will I hate a low-flow sink faucet & do I need lead -free?
Comments (4)Thanks, y'all. Yes, we do drink out of the bathroom faucet when brushing teeth, etc. so I guess I should go with "lead-free". My original concern was that lead-free choices seemed limited and all had low-flow (vs. just "low-lead" choices or regular ones.) I did find a good deal on a nice-looking widespread faucet that is lead-free. I was originally concerned that the low-flow would be an issue, or that "lead-free" meant "plastic parts that would break" but the manufacturer's rep assured me that I could just swap out the aerator if I didn't like the low flow and that it was still made of brass parts, but that they just changed the formulation of the brass to reduce the lead to meet the "lead-free" limitations. I guess my state (Maryland) has just enacted stricter lead requirements anyway. Not sure if they could have sold me a regular one or not, but I have noticed some faucets listed as "not for shipment to CA or VT". Anyway--here is a link if anyone else is interested. Comments (21)I am happy to report that the sink has been excised from the Corian! It's now on my DR table (which tends to be my overflow project room) and I spent a few hours last Saturday looking through the remnants at nearby stone yards here in southern Maine. Yikes - what a variation in price! In one very close to my home, I saw a remnant of imperial Danby Marble that was beautiful with the sink, as the soft tan in it was picking up the crackle finish in the sink. I made my vanity in the powder room from an antique bureau. I need a top about 23 x 43, and currently have a 3" back splash. That place quoted me $1050.+ :-( Current top, which I'd save and possibly use again someday, if I tire of the sink above. I went to a much smaller two man operation, and while they didn't have a remnant that I liked as well, their price, including templating and install, was approx. $400. :-) I left my name and they saw the faucet handle that I lugged around to hold up to the stone, so they know what I'm looking for. I'll check back with them from time to time to see what else they may have. I also saw this overmount sink in a painted wooden top in the link below, and if I can't find some stone that doesn't break the bank, I may go this route. I could also do some faux marble painting, in either something like the Imperial Danby or what I think the dark green marble is above - Empress Green? I think that a soft white with tan veins, along the line of what I did on this little antique table with gray veins below might be best in my home, though. Comments (0)I'm having a long vanity space but have to use 18" vanities because of space issues. I want one single long rectangular sink to center in the vanity rather than two sinks, one on each end. I want to use a widespread faucet. I'm trying to get the sink size in proportion to the counter top space. last monthlast modified: last monthI'm pretty sure my sinks are 17-18" ovals, and they feel average in size. I wouldn't want those little tiny Ikea sinks, but I see no reason to go larger than average.
What I dislike about them is that they're shallow. I grabbed this picture from Google -- mine are actually white (cultured marble -- not fantastic to look at, but it cleans up easily), and I have changed those sad faucets. The problem is that if you turn the water on with any force, it "bounces" off the shallow front and splashes you.
In our old house we had the cheapest sinks Lowes sells. They weren't undermount (and undermount is better), but they were great. They were maybe 1" smaller than these vintage sinks I have now, but they were deep. I think they were ceramic, and they cleaned up easily. Loved them.As for width of the vanity, what really matters -- matters much more than having the sink centered -- is having drawer storage AT the sink.
A 1" overhang, as long as it's on all sides not touching a wall, is fine.
The best faucets are wall-mounted -- but few people use them for sinks. With a wall-mounted faucet, you can easily clean the vanity without "flossing" the faucets. Second-best is a wide-mounted set (usually 8" apart). Worst is a 4" mounted set with an escutheon plate -- it's the most to clean, and it's also the cheapest /most common faucet.
