Tomatoes and fish/seaweed emulsion application
Comments (12)Jon, By N stuff, I meant the Neptune's, -fishy stuff, Some fish ferts. are famous for smellyness. Why would straight nitrogen smell or deter deer? ... :) He, he, consider the source. The micronutrients would be nice though. It was Rangier that was refering to the 'great low N, high P-'. Not that I'm agin' a natural source, as I could sure use a bag of horse or cow flops, now for tea [hmm, most N sources sure would smell, but not as badly as fish]. Some wood chips, that are still too near the edge of the veggie patch, are corraling, too much nitrogen, and a little supplementation would help. Molasses [and banana peel] is a surprisingly good source of potassium. "Only two things that money can't buy - True Love and Home Grown Tomatoes ". Who does that song, It's a Hoot! Comments (10)I've got a hose end sprayer like that too but until I have to water every day in the summer I use the bug sprayer. Also some of my plants are too small to hit with the hose end one yet. Most of my pots are 11 in. X 14 in. I use the hose with the long handled shower head type end that doesn't let the water dig up my pots. I read that bugs don't like the seaweed extract.I hope it's good info-true. Looks like I'm lucking out in the Aphid Dept. this year so far. I had tons of Aphids but they are now just mummies. I didn't think the wasps (Golden Chalcid)I let go last year were supposed to overwinter but it seems like they might have. Lots of hard light brown dead, hollow aphid mummies on my plants in the last few days. YEEE HAAAAAAAAA!Eat um up.Get um boys... Even the aphids I have inside are getting mummified. Now if the Green Lacewings come back I'm not going to know how to act. Grasshoppers are allready out though. The big brown suckers. Comments (6)I've tried many brands (most fairly stinky), but Neptune's Harvest is mild enough to use [lightly] indoors. It is processed differently from other brands, as well, so is supposed to be better. Visit their website for their story. I was so impressed with the product from small bottles that I went ahead and ordered the 5-gallon pail, along with their excellent seaweed....See Moremolasses added to fish emulsion as a starter solution?
Comments (2)Soil microbes, the Soil Food Web, might be present depending on the condition of the soil. The soil food web needs adequate amounts of organic in the soil to function well. According to an article in the current issue of Fine Gardening magazine a fish fertilizer did just as well as any of the synthetic fertilizers with plants grown in containers. Molasses is a sugar, although some do contain nutrients plants can use, and like any sugar could stimulate some of the members of the Soil Food Web into greater activity. Whether that is beneficial or not has not been looked into very well. Some recipes I have seen using fish emulsion and molasses include seaweed emulsions with about 1 tablespoon molasses, 1 cup each of fish emulsion and kelp (seaweed) in 1 gallon of water. Not something I've found necessary to mix or use. kimmq is kimmsr...See MoreRelated Professionals
