Reno ideas kitchen that has entryway from garage

Renovation ideas for this style kitchen which has entry doorway in the corner of the kitchen which leads from the garage to kitchen? Want it to look freeflowing and put together but worry this door will make it look not uniform (Doorway is to left of pantry in photos)

What type of renovation? Gut remodel (gives you the most options), nothing moves (not many/least options), something in between?

To start, I recommend reading the opening post and the Featured Answer of the "New to Kitchens? Read Me First!" thread. The thread describes what we need to help you, including a fully-measured layout of the spaces involved in the remodel and a sketch of the entire floor the Kitchen is on. Excerpt from the Read Me thread:

By "fully-measured", we mean a layout with the widths of each wall/window/door/doorway and the distances between each wall/window/door/doorway labeled. See a sample below. If something cannot be moved or changed, label it precisely on your layout (see post in sample) and tell us why it cannot be moved/changed -- we may have some ideas for you.

The sketch of the entire floor lets us see how the Kitchen relates to the rest of the home. It doesn't have to be to-scale, but it should accurately show how the rooms relate to each other and should include all interior & exterior doors. In addition, it will help us see how traffic flows in, around, and through the Kitchen. Label the front entry and family entry. The family entry is usually a garage or side entry, but it might not be. It's helpful to know which door you use to bring in groceries.

Regardless of how you draw it up (by hand, computer, etc.), please be sure all measurements are labeled. (Note: Computer generated layouts often lack key measurements and, sometimes, measure to/from things like the middle of a wall or the middle of a window. Neither are useful. Measure each item and the distances between each item.)

- Tell us about you and your family and how you plan to use your Kitchen. All-adults? Empty Nesters? Children (now or in the future)?
- What appliances (& their sizes) do you plan to have?
- Where are you flexible? Can walls/windows/doors/doorways change (move, change size, add, delete)?
- Do you have a basement under the Kitchen or are you on a slab?

Nothing great will come forth in advice, until you do a drawing, with every inch of every wall, every window and exactly where it is IN that wall, Every opening, doorway etc.....feet/inches.

Our garage is like yours now, detached and away from the house. My husband has taken it over for his boat building hobby so we don't use it as a garage. Our driveway comes to the front of the house and our kitchen is at the back so I just bring groceries in through the front. When I have a large grocery order to bring in, if my husband's not around, I have one of those large old lady shopping carts that can handle about 4 large bags at a time and I use that. No problem. I just wheel it into the kitchen. If I used my garage regularly to put my car away, I wouldn't want to have to come and go through the basement to access my car, let alone schlep grocery bags up the stairs. I don't know how important it is for you to put your cars away at night or how old you are, but the older you get, the more you'll appreciate things on one level.

It appears that a certain "renovator" is very quick to offer a wealth of picayune knowledge, yet nothing is cited so that one may ascertain the validity of such claims. Self-closing hinges are absolutely necessary for a garage man door. Call the Elyria building department and the inspector will tell you that the project will be turned down if those hinges are not installed. Any reputable contractor knows how difficult it can be to navigate through the code books; as many sections will refer to other sections, or even different code books. Furthermore, many municipalities have adopted their own set of rules that are above and beyond that of the Ohio code; in which case, the contractor must abide to that code. I would be wary, not of your contractor, rather a disputative "renovator" that makes claims that a CO2 detector is a good defense against fire. Even more, to make claims as to what the code says, yet offer no citation for reference. It sounds as if your contractor is a commercial contractor and following commercial codes, rather than residential.

OK, good: it sounds like my original leanings are reasonably sound, especially to want to shorten the wall section on the left that is, for all purposes of flow, unnecessary. Now we see how complicated - therefore expensive (or not) - it is to reduce that bit of clunk. The real question would be whether to infill. We should try to guess how much a change at the entry will affect light getting from the kitchen area into the dining room. In a best case scenario, the width of the entry would narrow, from 48" to ~41-43" (27 or 28" depth on both sides to cover standard counters). So that might not be too bad a change. The lighting in the kitchen should improve some by the time we're done, which might help in all scenarios. We're still looking at options, but we'll certainly be swapping out the kitchen's one (count 'em, one, and very poor) overhead light for recessed lighting, and we're nearly decided on adding a skylight as well. Rebunky: Doing the little half wall at right might be a good idea to weigh. Thanks for the example picture, and also the photoshop of my current idea. The visuals really do help. I'm likewise unsure about the "break" I currently have in the back counter. It may be that rather than tie in those back cabinets, it'd look good just drop a freestanding piece of furniture into the space. I'm also wondering about running a bit of counter between the two locations. There's a couple of ways that might happen. I'm not sure if this'll make sense without a diagram, but if we add a 15"D cabinet to that well at the final 67" of the kitchen space, as shown, and then run the counter straight backward to the main run of cabinets, as shown, the bridge space (now left open) would be 10" deep and the passthrough area adjacent to the powder room consistently 32" wide. So I'd need either adequate support for 10" x ~30" run of counter there, or to build some storage 10" deep. jannicone, thank you Anglophilia, I'm going to quite nagging my husband after your comment : - | Laura, Sometimes it seems like the house is conspiring against us - every little thing becomes a giant thing! I'm not sure my sense of humor will always remain intact, and yes, it seems problems keep expanding! Tree stumps were ground were yesterday, now DH has to take a week off next month, rent a back-hoe and dig french drains, install dry wells on both sides of house and smooth trucked-in top soil, plant seed. Moisture barrier goes in next week - all this before the hardwood can go in! We have to re-landscape where the trees were next spring and re-build our veggie garden at some point.. and all this is outside the house! cpartist, and that your nose is the last of your woes. Read this to DH last night... we were both laughing so hard at the rhyming! I have seriously considered taking up those funny "cigarettes" again. Something I haven't done in over 30 years. I honestly wouldn't blame you with all your problems! I may be switching to the 'hard stuff' at some point.. I'm thinking moonshine! LOL! ninasmom, thank you. Doc said 'bed rest for few days' and I took that to mean 2-3 days. No scans, so I'm taking it easier longer now.
