Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 7/16/2023
Comments (20)Here I am bringing up the rear - seems to be a pattern for me most weeks! I applaud all who have lost weight no matter the amount or the length of time it took. The older we get, the harder it is to take off those stubborn pounds and I really appreciate how hard everyone is working. It doesn't go along with the calorie/weight charts, but I find that if I consume more than 1200ish calories per day I gain. To lose, I have to drop my intake to about a 1000/day. Exercising helps a bit, but I think it keeps us healthy more than it helps us lose weight. At least for me that's the way it seems to work. Funky, I know it's a few weeks off, but enjoy your vacation and be proud of how much you have lost. That's a lot of hard work you've done and you should pat yourself on the back. Bunny, I did Invisalign a few years ago and it took a couple of months before I noticed any difference in how my teeth look. But, I knew it was working because my teeth were always sore for 2-3 days after getting new trays and I could feel the gentle pressure the trays were putting on my teeth. The original plan was for 18 months, but at the end of that time, my dentist decided to go an additional six months. It was all worth it as I now have beautiful straight teeth and I feel so much more confident when I smile. During the time I was wearing them only one person noticed and commented, but she was someone who was considering doing it herself so she was tuned in to them. As far as not leaving them in as much as recommended, I wasn't always diligent. I like to drink tea in the mornings, and because I'd been told that tea would stain the trays and my teeth, I'd leave them out in the mornings so I could enjoy tea time. In the end, I don't think it mattered; I got the end result I was after. We were out of town last week, and despite my best intentions, I did not get much movement in. We were in the car for several hours a day each day and when we did stop for the day, it was so hot (triple digits) I just could not bring myself to move around. I tried to be careful what I ate, but when out of town and eating out, there are so many temptations. I don't think I gained any weight, but I felt so bloated when we got home. After getting back on my regular routine, I'm feeling much more myself. I hope all of you have had a great week and that next week is even better! :)...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 6/16/2024
Comments (13)legomom, there is absolutely nothing wrong with walking some while running! I do that all the time! Probably more than I should but it makes my dog happy to pause and get some sniffing done while I walk and rest a little. Running elevates the heart rate and burns more calories, but if you get in more distance by walking some of the distance, it's still a huge win. I've been doing well with lap swimming in the mornings despite busier than usual pool. I really look forward to the summer months where I can access the 50m pool. I was lucky this week that the weather turned quite cold (40 one morning, 50 this morning) and so fewer people came to use the few lanes left from the swim team that has completely taken over 6 of 8 lanes in the pool. The coach is really nice and actually gave me some kicking pointers this morning, but I wish they would equally share the pool with the community instead of taking 6 lanes during the only 50m time. On non-swimming mornings I have been consistently running. On Sunday I dragged my dog on a longer run, about what we were doing at the end of last summer. The weather was nice so I took an extra long route that took us up to a park with a trail system and ran a little on the trails. Hoping to continue pushing our distance. To be honest, my dog is probably holding me back but I love her company and she needs exercise too. (The vet has checked her and there is nothing wrong, she just doesn't always want to keep the same pace as I do.) Yesterday I had work off for the Juneteenth holiday and so after taking the dog for a run, my husband and I went golfing (walking, no cart) and that was a nice extra bit of exercise. I even did much better than I usually do. (I'm not a good golfer so minor successes here.) The weather was really lovely and not too hot. I may not be getting weight lifting done every week day, but I've managed several days this week so that feels like a win. I need to keep it up. It's just tough to find time right now at lunch. I've had several weeks of just back to back to back meetings right over lunch time. I'm hoping things will improve a little and I can be more consistent. I continue to fast. Last week I managed 2x 36hr fasts and this week I may try the same. I did a 36hr fast on Monday and I'll see how I feel by the end of the day today if I need to eat some dinner or can power through until morning. I have been probably worse than usual with snacking, including chips. I'm also still really struggling with extra people in the house. (These things may be related.) Last night I was trying to prep some veggies for a healthy dinner and my 19 year old niece decided she wanted to eat cereal and toast and plopped right down where I was trying to prep so I had to move to avoid gluten contamination. She wasn't doing anything wrong (there are seats at the peninsula) but it's tough to feel like my safe space isn't safe....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 3/21/2025
Comments (6)Right, funky, that is the question RE: maintenance. Some people are successful at dropping dose and/or spacing out their shots to more days. There is no real maintenance protocol, and it really is individualized. I’ve stayed around the same this week, maybe up half a pound. I just don’t think for the metabolic benefits I’d ever be able to come off it. There are so many other medications in the pipeline, including oral medications that might be better for maintenance. Lilly is now offering the Zepbound in vials for cash price for those without insurance, and they have to be ordered every 45 days so that might work for a maintenance plan. It is slightly less than what I am paying for the single injector pens per month. I did at least get through some closet cleaning this week. Donation bags, recycle bags, take for alterations pile, and being able to shop in my closet again, which is great. On the what to wear thread you can follow my drama on getting a new suit for headshots. I think right now I’m between a 10 and a 12 so it’s still hard to figure out what fits, but I can wear some things that are M, so that’s a huge victory. But then some things are still L, XL, etc. At least I still have a booty. DH is hoping to lose some weight before we go to the music festival in May. I think I will make salmon in parchment for dinner today. That is one of my favorites. Back to school this week for the final stretch of the semester. This is just the worst time since it’s so stressful with student advising and registration. I just have to put my head down and plow through it....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 4/6/2025
Comments (24)Great job, Funky! I'm so proud of you. And thank you for sharing this with us--it's hard to be vulnerable. This is really wonderful news, and I'm impressed that you're making this massive lifestyle change. And there ain't no shame in bagged salads, either. Texanjana, that's great that you're still working upper body and moving. I admire that you're not using the recovery time as an opportunity to skip exercising. And you, too, Kswl! Keep working those hills! And I bet the dogs enjoy getting out so often, too. Not much to report here. Strength training has been going well, I'm taking my bike in for a tune-up today, and looking forward to warmer weather. I started dating a guy who's super active--one of our first dates, we went rock climbing at his gym. (Talk about being vulnerable... me in yoga pants squeezed into those climbing straps, trying to inch my way up a wall, with him watching from below. I had to just say to myself "to heck with it... who cares what my a$$ looks like right now...!) I dined out more last month, so I'm focusing on more cooking at home. My son's gf bought me a couple of healthy cookbooks, so I'm trying some new recipes, which has been fun....See MoreRelated Professionals
