Windows Design Dilemma

Transom windows in bedroom

Hello, looking for ideas for window treatments for the transom windows. We need to do outside mount since they are almost flush with the frame. Those are just the temporary blackout shades there now. I plan to remove the skinny curtain rods and might replace the panels. I would appreciate any help!

Are you hoping to cover the two little windows because of the light creeping in? Are you worried about privacy? If you’re okay with a little bit of natural light coming in, you could try a peel and stick window treatment. It would always stay the same, but could be something simple looking like seeded glass, or more complex like a stained glass look.

You have an interesting space there. Is that the only spot for the bed? You are blocking a door so not using it to get to the deck? Do you use those curtains for privacy/light blocking or are they just there to frame the windows? I think it's working for the space and satisfies the different needs of a door vs a window covering. #1 The panels need hemming. Because you have only blacked out the two transoms it appears you close the panels. A large valance across the entire room proud of the transoms would hide your curtain rods (not sure why you are not happy with them) but then you would never see the transoms. Is that what you would prefer--they just not be there? The roman shades would do the same since there's no room above the transoms. You have a ceiling that will compete with any added architectural detail like a wood valance would be...

Believe it or not, decent looking ceiling fans exist. On every design show I've ever seen they're the first things to be thrown out, but I have them in every bedroom. Mmm slight draft at night without the sound of floor fan... I pspent no fewer than 18 weeks looking (off and on) for a "pretty" one to go in my master. I have lived with a 4 poster bed. My experience - unless you have really high ceilings, and I'm talking like 10 ft, and a sizeable room, it will turn your space into... tiny. Once upon a time in a previous life I thought I had a big bedroom until I put a poster bed in there. I like your computer nook. I always wanted a space like that, which I could separate from the rest of the room with some romantic drapery tied back. I might force that idea on my formal dining room. :) beds/headboards coverin ga window do bother me. I don't like anything to cover a window (couch, table, or otherwise) -- but that's just me. And if it came down to a queen bed, or covering that window, sure - the window would get covered! We have single panels on our two bedroom windows, mostly because they're skinny and it looked silly to me to have two panels. If you need to cover the window, something that seems to help (at least when I've seen it done) is to pull the bed away from the wall a foot or so. Then you can go with two panels, and it looks kind of intentional instead of "didn't have space." Something else to keep in mind with blocking windows -- does the sun come directly in such that it would fade your bedding over time?

You are right about the personal preference thing. Even in my own home, there are two different preference. My wife is a much lighter sleeper and dislikes the rain and wind. Me, I could sleep next to railroad tracks. Most of the newer windows are going to be pretty stout and have some good sound cancelling properties so it won't be like rain on a tin roof. You can also opt for a full screen and that will keep the rain off the window. While you definitely want to plan for you needs/wants, think of the ultimate resale value as folks do like bright bedrooms.

I love Roman shades but something to think about in your situation is how much of the window will be blocked when the shades are “up”. It may be as much as half the window. That may or may not matter to you. The first picture below is of Roman shades in my bedroom in the up position, which blocks about half the window. The height of the window from trim to trim is 18”. This isn’t too much of an issue since we don’t spend time in this room during the day. Another option that hasn’t been mentioned are roller shades. The second and third photos are of roller shades in my home office. Note that I intentionally picked material that was light filtering, not light blocking, given the location. They make them in light blocking material as well which would be better for a bedroom. The valence at the top is only 4”; blocking less of the 18” tall window. The roller shades may or may not go well with your decor/home style. We have these in most rooms of our mid-century ranch and they wofk great.

@Mrs. Beasley made a great suggestion--decorative window film on the transoms to let some light in while offering privacy. This is from window film company:

Do consider a dreamy horizontal art work over the bed--sky, moon, sunset to echo the outdoor sky visible in the windows.

Also consider simple wall sconces instead of the oversized lamps blocking the windows and just plain white "blackout" curtains that can be pulled across the windows at nighttime.

Unless the light coming in is intrusive would recommend not covering the transoms.

Thank you for all the comments and suggestions. I should have specified that at certain times of the year, the light does come in, so looking to block that light. I like the idea of simple wall sconces instead of the lamps.
