Hi Tara. Definitely two twin beds to make the boys happy. I would place a small dresser/nightstand to give separation. Add a fun rug with a pattern.

I think a to scale floor plan of the room is a must posted here in jpeg format in a comment. How old are the boys ? Waht do they need for storage or disply ? IMO we need a lot more info and all posted here in comments. I like this set up in bedrooms often and my Dad did a really cool bookcase to seperate my sister and I in our lake cottage bedroom

@patricia, the boys are 13 and 10. There have a wide linear closet in this room with two doors that slide open on a track.

Great ages but not for sharing a room so seperation is a must but we need a to scale floor plan to see what is possible . 2 twins will take up twice as much space as the bunks actually maybe even a little more . Do they need a desk? I find most kids never use one it is just a drop zone. I see aneed for storage or at least the ability to put stuff away (no guarantee they will) We have had international high school students for the past 15 years and in all thta time only one ever used the desk for a desk. Clsets can have great use for storage as I mentioned especially for boys so I would get them to help with figuring out what they want and need , Floor plan please

FWIW i think it’s great when siblings share a room - they’ll have tons of memories from that time and it encourages a close relationship

@la_la that’s exactly why they are sharing a room. My the oldest will be 13 next week is now more like a 12 year old and it works. They will be getting their own room in about 2 years but for now they want to stay together. I do have a large dresser that I’m thinking about moving into the closet and the dresser also has a chest of drawers that sitting empty in the garage.

@patricia they have a small desk in there that I’m taking out because they just dump junk on it so I’m putting the desk in the storage room. They have a large dresser that’s on the left in the pic that I’m prob putting in the closet we also have a chest of drawers to match they they don’t use. Most of their clothing is hung in the closet so it doesn’t have to be ironed in the morning.

The room while completely empty is 12x12 excluding the closet (which is 6.5 feet long.)

The dresser is 5 feet long. They have about 70 inches of floor space right now between the dresser and the bottom full sized bed to lay around in the floor and play their video games. My plan is put the dresser in the closet. Im going through a phase where I hate having so much stuff out lol I did ask for their input they like anything as long as, according to them it’s “not girl colors”

The tv they have will be mounted on a 360 swivel mount.

Two year redo. So you will start all over with one boy in two years leaving this room for the other son or split up what you get for this room some for each boy? Until you know which I would not do much. The next few years are years of major maturation preferences will be vastly different. Maybe get the twin beds--larger ones that will hold them for the next 5-10 years, if you don't think one room should have a queen in it. Studies show homework done in public spaces gleans more learning. TVs and other attractive nuisances in bedrooms keep families segregated vs together. Everyone is screaming about the state of education right now but no one wants to admit social media access to the internet is the major competitor for student attention and do anything about it.

Where is the closet? which wall? a drawing of the floor plan would help.

if possible, I would put two twin beds on opposite walls and would separate them by the big dresser.

BTW, my boys, 4.5 years apart, shared a bedroom till they were 12 and 16, and they loved it

If you're not able to draw a floorplan showing dimensions, windows and doors, can you at least post pictures of all 4 walls, that would help.

@grewa002 I was definitely going to do that. I was not sure if I should use the wall with the window or the wall where the bunk bed currently is. The dresser is too wide to go between both beds so I was going to get a nice nightstand with two drawers. to go between the two beds.

I think the walls without the window. If you used full size beds, there wouldn't be much free space left between them, so twins it is.

Yes something similar just not too tall because it will used as a night stand between the two beds. And also storage.

Any drawers need to be super deep. Growing boys folded sweaters, jeans, etc. take up a lot of room Twin beds with drawers underneath will help with the off season clothes. Will you have room to walk or scoot on both sides of the beds to ease making them ( or at least change the sheets)? Something to keep in mind when choosing the chest for between the beds. I am happy you are going to twins vs bunks. Reasons: making / changing sheets, one or both boys are ill.

Yes I’ll have space on both side. The chest for between the bed won’t be too large. The current dresser they have is very deep so they can fit a minimum of 8 sweats and jeans side by side. In each of the kit drawers. The top drawer isn’t as deep which works okay because that’s where their under clothes go. It’s feel enough for a plastic show box bin. I have them in there to separate the underwear, undershirts, and socks.

The chest between the two beds can be as tall as the top of the mattress and box spring. There is no rule about the height of a nightstand.

Here's a to scale floor plan with your given dimensions. Since you mentioned the desk is being taken out of the room the the dresser you have is going in the closet all I'm showing are XL twin beds (80" long) with a 3 drawer dresser in between, a cordless natural fibre/bamboo roman shade, a picture shelf above each bed (they can place art or pictures they like and replace when they want), and each a task lamp on the dresser.

@lisedv this is amazing thank you! They’ve had shelving years again and loving putting their own little Knick knacks on it so I know they wld enjoy that. What do you think about the darkness of the room since I can’t change the floor? Shouldn’t stick with a bright type of rug to warm the space? Right now I have Benjamin Moore white dove on the walls and it still looks a big dark to me. One wall is a light gray. Should I do a stark white on all walls? One wall black?

Great advice thank you. I have white dove by Benjamin Moore painted on 3 of the walls now. It’s like a warm white. Do you think that’s a good shade or should I paint? I also have the trim painted in that color. The wall where the bunk beds is, is a light gray. Originally all the walls were a light gray.

I will definitely get a different color for the rug. I assumed since it was a light gray it would automatically lighten the room. The next color will be a beige rug. I just need to find coordinating comforters or quilts.
