We currently have a 39-inch wide cabinet enclosure in our kitchen where our refrigerator was located. We are purchasing a Miele combo steam oven, which will be the only appliance built into this cabinet. Since we won’t need to stack another appliance there, we are considering adding small drawers, shelves, or cabinet doors on either side of the Miele steam oven instead of altering the existing 39-inch cabinet to make it smaller.
I look forward to everyone’s ideas or suggestions

You should build your frig cabinet one or two extra inches deeper to cover yourself for the clearance in the rear. We are pathetic creatures of "trends" which is why we follow the leader. We are little lambs following what the manufacturers say is in style. Like clothes, appliances are exactly the same. Why was a white refigerator fine 10 years ago, and now it has to be SS to be in style? Why did CD never exist before, now we need it so the refigerator does not stick out as much...the sticking out never was on my mind 10 years ago. Baaa Baaa Baaaa little lambs. The manufacturers want us to replace these items. If we did not replace, they would work till failure so the replacement cycle would be extended.

I just posted in another thread about wall ovens/rangetops versus ranges. I don't have any information on Thermador other than to say I have had two Thermador cooktops with the simmer burners. They are a bit irritating, but they do work. Still, I plan to replace mine with a Bluestar 36" Platinum in two weeks. Woohoo! I suspect the Thermador will be very expensive. Here is what I just posted in another thread: I have only had rangetops and double oven combos. The advantage to this combination is you are not married to either appliance. If something goes wrong, it's easier to replace. The downside is extra cost of cabinetry. This combination is also easier on your back. The large range combinations look beautiful and many people love them. They are space savers. But, I have seen posters on this forum complaining about a problem with the oven that can't be fixed or a problem with the cooktop. Then, they discover that it's cost prohibitive to replace the whole unit.

"Freestanding" refrigerators are available in two types: Counter Depth and Standard Depth. When installed between cabinet panels like the one in this example, the refrigerator box of both types is aligned with the front edge of the panels and the counter but the doors stick out into the room. If you want the doors to be flush with the counters/cabinets you need to buy a "Built-in" type refrigerator like the ones invented by Sub Zero. These refrigerators need a face-frame on the enclosure. If you want to be sure a Counter-Depth or Standard Depth free-standing refrigerator will fit between two side panels, instead of 3/4" thick panels you could use a face-frame so the panels are farther apart than the opening. Then, if the refrigerator is too wide, the face frame can be modified. It also allows someone to install a Built-in type refrigerator later. Homeowners have become accustomed to modern European cabinetry where boxes are attached to one another but I still prefer the more substantial appearance of face-frame cabinetry. Its going to be there for a long time and I don't want any sagging doors.

So, you have not only excess width to use, but much more importantly you have lots of excess height to use - presuming the refrigerator was a standard full-height floor-standing model?

Drawers, cabinets, above and below the Miele oven, and presumably there was the usual cabinet above the refrigerator that needs to be integrated or replaced.

What to go there depends entirely on the rest of the kitchen and what you need/want to store.

And . . . is this cabinet part of a run of existing cabinetry, or does it stand by itself? How concerned are you with matching existing cabinet material/style/finish - and what is it - or would some variety be ok? Will you want a hood/vent above the oven - not common but some do. Do you want to provide for a possible future appliance to be added there - microwave, wine refrigerator, icemaker, etc? Do you have appliances you’d like to store other than on your counters?

I mean, if a 39” W x 80” H x 30” D space suddenly materialized in my kitchen, with none of it spoken for except the volume needed for a single wall oven, it’d be like the Kitchen Genie granted me one precious wish, not to be wasted!
