Please help-making formal lr less formal, pics and plans. TIA!
Comments (15)Hmm. If you want a transition, here are two other options that might be worth considering.. . . Option A. Put the flat screen on the wall opposite the fireplace -- over the baskets where the small pic is currently. Use the existing armoire for toy storage. Put two swivel or moveable chairs along the left end of the rug. Put another swivel chair about where the left couch cushion is in your second floorplan. Put the couch or a love seat where you show it in your second floor plan. As long as the tv is mounted medium high, you should have three good viewing chairs. Option two. Mount the tv on the wall where the armoire is currently. Put the couch where the loveseat is in your second floor plan. Put one swivel chair to the left of the fireplace (similar to your current floor plan). Consider building a deep uphoulstered bench to replace the bookcase on the left side of the fireplace. This lets you view the TV from the couch, one chair, and possible the bench. In terms of your laughing friends, tell them not to expect any permanent resolution to your LR decorating woes. Those of us with odd shaped LRs (mine is only a tad bigger than yours) end up shoving furniture around a lot as technology and family needs change. Over the years, my couch has been shoved up against every wall in my LR -- plus it "floated" in the middle of the room for about 8 years. Each arrangement has its pluses and minuses. My current arrangement, for example, sacrifices all attempt at having a graceful transition from my front entry and largely ignores my fireplace. Yet it works for us right now. The important thing is to find something that makes your family happy and comfortable -- at least for now....See MoreLooking for decor advice: how to make a formal dining room casual?
Comments (110)You could use some of that eyelet fabric over the mirrors on the 2 center quadrants from top to bottom and let the far left and far right mirrors unveiled. They make something called ticky tack, that teachers use to hold posters and things on walls(no nails). I wonder if that wouldn't work on your favorite eyelet pattern?, and not damage the wood/fabric/mirrors? A friend took pieces of an old heirloom lace piece and did that in her miniature curio cabinet she inherited over the back mirror lined surface.. She now uses the cabinet to hold all of her essential oil(many mini bottles)collection. If you like the country style dishware, the eyelet in the tea color(or you can tea stain some yourself) might look very pretty inside the darkwood and contrast with your white dishes? And tone down the shiny of the mirror? There is this product, that might be perfect for such an application: https://www.amazon.com/Sticky-Reusable-Gallery-Quality-Adhesive/dp/B01GEGXP0K/ref=asc_df_B01GEGXP0K/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198062181806&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7000896296704938960&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9027311&hvtargid=pla-323734168208&psc=1...See MoreHow can I make this fish tank less offensive?
Comments (23)A tank-suitable goldfish will grow to be 10” or more and needs a tank 70” long or more. More fish means adding tank size. Goldfish also produce a lot of waste so they need a really good filtration system and lots of water for that reason as well. Goldfish are not well-suited to living in bowls, and the original goldfish bowls were just market display for baby goldfish (like putting fish in a plastic bag). I really really love goldfish and would love to have a pond or tank someday but they seem to be a lot of work....See MoreHow to make off white appear more white and less cream?
Comments (12)I think it looks very nice just as it is. It's been painted and distressed to look like it is old, and if you paint it stark white it's going to look new. If you want an aged look, then keep it the way it is. If you consider that farmhouse is a look that incorporates what a farmer would have had in his/her home, then it's perfectly appropriate. The story could be that someone in a more formal wealthy home passed this piece on to the farmer. Authentic farmhouse is a medley of hand-me-down/handmade styles. Farmers didn't really "decorate" their homes, rather they evolved over time. Their furniture was more of a hodgepodge of colors, styles and patterns. So I think if you like it as is, decorate your room around it. This "modern farmhouse" trope is kind of cookie-cutter and cliche'd IMO....See MoreRelated Professionals
