The answer to this is to require the fabricator clear the layout of cuts with you before work is authorized. You can contribute more to your finished look by planning the layout with all the cuts and seams yourself. Again, the fabricator must verify the plan with your OK before he starts cutting. And then, you must examine and OK the cut pieces before you allow him to deliver to your house and install. A fabricator may not be an artist. Or he may have attempted to get the most out of the slabs you chose. That's why you do the layout at the stone yard before you buy the slabs. Now maybe Joe has an idea with a grinder and material to suggest a way to connect the veins on your slabs. Or replace them.

@dan1888 Thanks for comment. Sadly this is why I hired the designer. To me it’s captain obvious the seam shouldn’t be where they left it but im not in the business so I’m asking for others opinions. I’m not sure if the designer messed up or if the granite guy did but I know we talked about lining up the veins while I was with the both of them at the stone yard. 2 contractors said it’s bad. The designer says it’s not that noticeable… when you say if Joe has an idea to line them up- is there a solution that doesn’t involve replacing the whole piece that you know of? I bought 3 slabs so he would have enough to do it right. Is this cringe or am I being too picky and this is normal? As an aside- the guy is remaking the island bc the designer told him 4 x 9 instead of 5 x 9 when they met for him to measure. This is a vacation home so we haven’t been available to babysit the project that has gone extremely well until this last but very important part.

I doubt you're going to get a re-do out of that one. The location is bad, but it's not a bad seam; the alignment isn't perfect, but it's not horrible, in your zoomed-out view it looks fine. I would put a tall decorative olive oil bottle or something similar in front of it to take the eye off of it and be done with it.

Sounds like your designer isn’t great with details. Get him/her involved especially since you can’t be there all the time.

Your designer isn't advocating for you and they should. I suspect the "it doesn't look too bad" could be because they are partially to blame.

If I were not a type A person or not a 'hey this cost good money' person, I'd think it is perfectly acceptable to do what was suggested below and put a bottle of olive oil in front of it, because it is beautiful stone and not too big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. Once you start using the kitchen you may not notice it that much.

I think it's a great job. You need a seam somewhere. That's a long run.

First thing I would do is find kinder friends.

As for the seam - did you have a slab that was long enough to do the whole run without a seam?

If not where did you want the seam placed?

Were your expectations realistic with matching the stone on either side of the seam when using a natural stone product? (Designer's job to set expectations).

Did you have a preview of the design prior to installation? Again, this is the designer's job to make sure that you know where seams are going to be placed and have you approve the layout, giving you the option of purchasing more slabs if necessary to get a better matched seam. This is part of setting realistic expectations.

Are you focused on the seam because it is a brand new backsplash and you don't have anything else going on in the kitchen to reduce focus on the seam.

Is there a viable solution that would make you happier? What solution do you want? Are you willing to purchase additional slabs to get a better pattern match?

I at first thought the seam was mid stove where the product naturally starts and stops. Does that not bother you? It shows the variation in a natural product. Your seam isn't any worse than that. It is a natural product and only so much matching can be done.

In person it is pretty noticeable. The stonemason explained to me about matching up the veins and the need for additional slabs of the same lot that “mirror” each other so they can line them up. That’s why I bought the 3 slabs. It is too long for a single slab so I was prepared for a seam. What I’m seeing is they don’t line up and there is a grout line between so it is more noticeable. To the “nicer friends” comment- my friend is a contractor in another state and he pointed it out and said he wouldn’t approve that. I met with another contractor today who showed me an area on another slab that was repaired and looks great- he said a talented stonemason could cut the area back and add resin and polish to a fine polish and I probably wouldn’t be able to tell. So that I think is my hopeful answer to how to deal with this without having to replace the whole thing.

The stone mason explained why, in his expert opinion, you needed to supply him with extra slabs. If you informed him that you would supply extra product, and you did that, then he is at fault. He miscalculated or neglected to properly use the material you paid more for at his request. Inform him in writing that he hasn't performed the work as he promised. You want that portion replaced.

What other have said about living with it doesn't apply when you and the stone mason had a specific agreement about this exact subject. He hasn't performed.

That’s a pretty good seam- not perfect. Seems to me they started the slab far right so the longest section of counter would have no seam- what is that ten feet? Then the smaller section past the stove. I wish they had aligned the cut with the hood but otherwise this looks pretty good for natural materials.

That is an excellent seam. It's hardly your installer's fault your designer put it at eye level. If you want inconspicuous seams, have her pick a product with no movement and use solid surface instead of stone or estone.

On second thought, your fabricator/installer did screw up. He failed to properly set customer expectations. He should have shown you several previous installations of his that accurately represent how materials with movement align at seams and have you sign each one so there could be no doubt that you were informed before authorization.

3 slabs is not enough for optimal seaming with a full height backsplash, in any but a small kitchen. Just your basic 50 square foot of counter space smaller kitchen takes 2 slabs. Adding a backsplash would need the 3rd. For a small kitchen. For a larger kitchen with a run that long, you needed 3 slabs for the counter, without the splash. Adding a full height splash needed an additional 4th slab for optimal seams everywhere, and that would have had a high waste factor. You almost double your counter expense when adding a full height splash.

Lantern Visual is so obviously AI generated. And a pro? The project photos are very nice, but the "typical job cost" is under $4,950???? Weird.

I think your seam is good, I also thought that the naturally occurring abrupt change inthe MIDDLE of the stovetop so the one to the left is minor.

I'll give you the same advice I give others. Right now, you are solely focused on the BACKSPLASH. 100% focused. Others, will be focused on the whole, of which the backsplash is about 10-15% of the entire kitchen. Additionally, you have no color or accessories to smooth your eye and create a "whole visual".

This is not a hill to die one. the installation overall looks really good. if this is the worst part of it, I think it's really good.

It's getting off topic, but now I'm wondering about Lantern Visual too... Is $1,600 - 4,950 a bad price range for 3D rendering/design service? I don't know what design service prices are. I see some people do it for free here often enough.
