I am getting ready to do exactly the same thing and this is the my plan. I am not changing the location of any of the fixtures and I am not changing out the bathtub, so my list is straightforward. If you have major changes, the sequence might change. 1. Gather together all of the things you want to install - I have the vanity, toilet, plumbing fixtures (came today! yay!) and I am still waiting on the floor and wall tile. 2. When you have everything gathered, you are ready to start. Demo the old vanity and the wall mirror (if the mirror is big like mine you might have to hire glass people to remove it and haul it away). (I will remove the vanity and break it down). 3. Next get the plumber in to do the plumbing rough for the shower fixtures. He will cut into your old tile to get to the pipes, but doesn't do the tile demo. 4. Tile guy comes next. He will demo the shower and floor and put up the moisture barriers, cement board, tile, etc. He removes old toilet. You might consider timing your demo to coincide with trash pickup day (our trash guys will haul away the debris for a $20 gratuity). Depending on the size of bath, tiling could take 3-4 days. 5. Paint behind the toilet and the vanity wall. 6. The plumber comes back to finish the shower fixture installation and to install the toilet. 7. Immediately after the tile is done, get the glass people in to measure for the shower door (if that is what you are doing). It takes a couple of weeks to make the door so have them come as soon as the tile is set. 8. The carpenter comes next to install the vanity, medicine cabinet, etc. 9. As soon as the vanity is installed, you need to call the counter top people to template. It might take a week or two to get your counter top. Once the counter top is installed, the plumber returns to install the sink faucet. This is the time I would paint the rest of the room and install the mirror. I am likely doing a tile backsplash so I will need to get the tile guy back once the countertop is installed. Last thing that gets installed is the shower door and that will be in a few weeks from when you called them. As soon as the tile comes, I will start setting up the appointments. I will call the tile person first because he will be the busiest. Once I know when he's coming, I will call the plumber to do the rough the day before the tile guy is due. If everything is scheduled properly, I am expecting my bathroom remodel to take around 2 weeks. I am not installing or changing lighting - but you could have the electrician come at any time (but before the painting).

If you can't find matching cabinets, then maybe you could go for the unfitted look and get a hutch or hutch-looking cabinets, painted a color. I'd just like to put in a vote for an island--or at least a cart. In our old house the floor, like yours, was sort of too empty without an island, but too small for a permanent one. We had what we called the "baking cart" that was made of butcher block and happened to have a perfect little spot to fit away when not in use. It was really useful and held a lot of stuff. it was not an island for seating/eating or anything--but a much-needed extra work surface. I like the cart examples you posted earlier--Crate and Barrel also has a nice one that comes in a small or larger size. I would definitely say get something that has storage. I wanted to say also that I am a little nervous about cabinets a full 24" deep on the wall you have marked. I think they will really impede traffic flow. If it's panrty storage you need you could get that with something shallower. The tape is a good idea but to really get an idea of how cabinets would make the room feel, make some 3-D mockups with boxes--that way you will really get a sense of the mass. One spot that seems ripe to me for an additional cabinet is where the garbage can in now--that would be an incredibly useful spot both for storage and more counter. Could the trash go somewhere else--under the sink maybe? HTH

She can be mean and difficult to get along with at times. I'm not sure what to do. Family members and others know her all too well to get mixed up in a project with her. This is one of those cases in which you need to be realistic about how much you can "fix" the world for her. She doesn't help much, being a crab. So to some degree, she will reap what she has sown. And we all deserve to, for the most part. Those of us who are communicative and reasonable and even nice will find others who will help us when we need it. Those of us who are crabs, etc., will not. Do the best you can, and simply know that you will not be able to find a perfect solution for this, and that it's NOT YOUR fault. Get as good a GC as you can, ask him to check w/ you weekly, and let her cope w/ the worries she has. (My next-door neighbor was a crab when she was younger, apparently. Plus, she became estranged from her sister, never reconciled, so she doesn't know any nieces or nephews. And she and her DH never had kids. And now that she's frail and not so quick mentally, she's alone--she has aides who stay with her, a stranger manages her finances, only a few neighbors--the ones she was mostly pleasant to--stop in due to basically wanting to do the right thing. But she's alone. If she'd been willing to be pleasant to her sister, she might have a niece of nephew who'd help her now, or care about her. She doesn't even know where they LIVE. She is reaping what she has sown. I keep thinking how sad it is, and wishing I could fix it, but the person who could have fixed that was her, not me. And the time to have fixed it was long ago, not now.)

As someone who deals with facts on a daily basis in addition to the skill of evaluating the validity of research data (I teach science), the idea that data and facts cannot be objectively verified I find puzzling. As I mentioned, we use facts all the time to make decisions, for example, we check the weather before going somewhere to determine how to dress. Weather predictions are made based on facts, measurements and data. But, since weather is a system that is highly variable (many data points and facts affect the system) there is always going to be some level of uncertainty in your predictions. Meteorologists factor that into their weather reports, and usually give a range of predictions, such as 20% chance of rain. That is not zero, btw, so I always carry a collapsible umbrella in my car. But we don't assume that a meteorologist has some hidden political agenda, nor do we necessarily question the need for weather forecasting, particularly those of us in outdoor professions who depend on reliable weather data to make critical decisions. I have no reason to doubt that the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, one of the most respected and admired research centers in the world, would not be working diligently to present the best and most valid data available. Also, since science thrives on constant questioning and examination, they would not rest until more and more "truth" could be determined. I know science constantly refines ideas, I'm comfortable with evolving advice based on the results of more and more information being investigated and newer data coming in. That's why medical advice evolves over time and what was once standard advice, (like taking vit. E protects against heart disease, for example, which has evolved to it being a minor preventative factor if at all, not trumping genetics, and having no benefit in clinical studies as a treatment, in fact in might be a detriment and is no longer supported by the American Heart Association). I not only have confidence in the public health researchers at the University of Michigan and my alma mater Michigan State, for example, I feel blessed beyond compare that I live in a state where such institutions can exist and thrive. I feel the same way about the Johns Hopkins Center, their web site is a marvel of useful and helpful information. As well as the many professional groups I belong to that share "truths" amongst members so we can develop strategies to meet all kinds of situations arising out of real data coming out of the real world. For example, the spotted lanternfly is similar to this covid-19 virus in that it has the potential to decimate dozens of economic fruit crops. No one is questioning the validity or political agendas of folks reporting on its spread, nor on ideas for mitigation and control. That's the irony to me, I live in a state known for having more colleges than just about any other state, (we are number 9 for number of colleges) and yet folks want to refuse the good advice one can find here for FREE! Folks from all over the world come here to convene with some of the best brains on the planet! When it was just "their loss" I was fine with it. Now, when it is my own close family at risk and myself, not satisfied! I have also noted, that in my rural area, there is a movement to not only flaunt social distancing recommendations and rules, but also other laws regarding social conduct. For example, two weekends ago a gang of three wheelers rode up and down the streets in my neighborhood for quite a while, knowing full well that ORVs are not allowed on public roads. It was totally annoying because we were outside trying to enjoy the beauty and peace of our yard. It's happening on a regular basis now, folks going out and engaging in socially disruptive behavior, I guess either hoping to draw folks into conflicts or hoping no one will come out to stop them from the local neighborhood. My friend's husband is a policeman, and this is totally adding to their stress unnecessarily since they are not only having to police serious crimes, but respond to the health crisis as well. So they do not need to deal with things like folks setting off firecrackers, etc.which are totally avoidable. Regarding the three wheelers, eventually they got bored and moved on, but such things are happening on a regular basis in my neighborhood, gangs of trucks and motorcyclists driving around revving their motors, etc. And I'm not talking about groups gathering for socially distancing parties, which we had up the street from us. That was very clear what was going on as the cars all had "Happy Birthday" balloons decorating them. There are several cases of church communities being ravaged by the virus here in MI and some folks have lost MULTIPLE family members. We stopped going to church before it was cancelled, and we intend to keep on participating virtually. The biggest issue for me is how to continue to support local feeding efforts which our church was heavily involved in as volunteers. I am having to remind myself to regularly donate to the food pantry now online with money instead of food, and also not forget to regularly tithe at church.
