Eliminate the living room?
Comments (47)I added the stools at the island...because there seems to be room. And you could talk to people at the island, rather than to their backs, as they look out the window. The fridge...I moved the fridge so it would be closer to the stools at window (seemed to be good snack/drink area) and to balance the pantry. With the kitchen open to everything else, it's nice to keep all the heavy/tall sections from being stacked together. Although some might like it, I prefer the balance. Moving the fridge also allows you to keep the dishwasher as is, without being in your main work triangle...so you can easily unload and place dishes in china cabinet. The windows on each side of the range are mostly to balance the light. Rather than having light on two sides (opposite each other) light on three sides is more cheerful....and it breaks up all that cabinet space. With the pantry, you should have plenty of storage : )...See MoreHalf vault ceiling, will windows on either side of fireplace work?
Comments (19)My husband and I purchased a 1971 ranch that we're renovating a year ago, and we have the same problem with the lack of natural light. Even though we do have what would seem to be plenty of windows in the main living areas, they all open up onto covered porches or patios, a garage (used to be a carport) and a patio converted into a sunroom that isn't all that sunny, lol. So I pulled out my bag of tricks that I use when staging to visually brighten my rooms. Lighter furniture/accessories, white drum shades on my table lamps, light natural linen drapes, etc., all make a difference. You will find that removing the popcorn and painting the ceilings white will make a HUGE difference in how much lighter/brighter the rooms feel. Even though we didn't have popcorn in this house (we've removed it in the past) we did have a flat, swirly texture that we removed because we know how much flat white ceilings can brighten a room. While I often advise clients to wrap the wall color onto their ceilings in their cavernous two-story living rooms, yours will probably benefit most from just keeping the ceiling white as your slant doesn't appear to be huge. Accessible Beige is a lovely color, I used it in my mother's home. Good luck, from one ranch lover to another! :)...See MorePortico over half moon window?

Comments (6)Have a UV window film applied to the top arched portion. It looks clear but will block the heat and glare. That allows you to put whatever type of shade you prefer on the lower part of the window. A second option would be a drapery rod above the entire window, with drapery panels on the outer sides of the windows that you could pull fully closed when needed....See MoreRelated Professionals
