Under Cabinet Lighting: Where's the switch?
Comments (15)My cabs all have xenon light bars in varying configurations of 2 and 3 lights per bar. LIke Warmfridge's set up, each bar has it's own on/off and high/low switch. Still, I primarily control all kitchen lights by means of a wall panel at the entrance to the kitchen. There are 6 switches with dimmer controls for all my lights: ceiling cans, pendant, undercab, above cab and in-cab. Sometimes I get a kick out of just playing with panel switches and dimmers just to see the different lighting effects in the kitchen. :-)...See MoreUnder Cabinet Lighting with Wall Switch
Comments (5)You can't hide the transformer in a wall, it is a code violation. Do you have a basement underneath the kitchen? My electrician installed the transformer for my in-cabinet lights on the basement ceiling. For under cabinet lights, I have Xenon direct wire lights that are connected to a dimming wall switch. They don't require a transformer....See MoreCombining under-cabinet and can lights on same switch?
Comments (6)Absolutely NO! General lighting should be on a different switch than task lighting and accent lighting. You want the over the sink lighting on one switch, for those late night visits where you only want one light to come on. The under cabinet lighting should be on another switch. That’s especially important for functionality and scene setting. The general kitchen lighting and general dining lighting should be on two separate circuits. And please reconsider your kitchen plans. No tall object should ever interrupt a run of counter space. The refrigerator is in a very bad location and should be moved elsewhere. I would suggest shortening the peninsula and placing it across from there....See MoreSeparate switches for under and in cabinet lights?
Comments (11)“I see not point in undercabinets or glass cabinet lighting to be on a dimmer” Why the heck not for undercabinet lighting. Patricia, tell us why not. It’s inexpensive, and gives flexibility on light levels. Why just have undercabinet lighting that is limited to just on-off when making them dimmable is easy and not expensive? Patricia, tell us why this would be bad. Undercabinet lighting is very nice in the evening as just a soft glow, or low level first thing in the morning when you don’t want blaring lighting in your eyes. “dimmers can decrease the life expectancy of your LED lighting.” @Kelly Zamonski - you are incorrect, You are confusing LED with old-timey fluorescent tubes from 30 years ago. Unless you believe you know more than Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute who says that not only will dimming not reduce the life of LEDs, it might extend it....See MoreRelated Professionals
