Who has a combo washer and dryer? Pros and cons

I do not have a combo but for me I would not like that if I do a load of wash I can not start another load of wash until the first load is dry. With separate washer and dryer I can throw first load of wash in dryer and then get the second load of wash started in washer. By time washer is done with second load the first load is done drying. Now if I had 2 combos that would work well.

I don't, but if space were really limited, I would definitely consider one - my understanding is that they do a good job, but are slow. Do a search - there have been discussions on them in the recent past.

By contrast, I had one in London, and never bothered with the dryer. They are a compromise, in order to save space in smaller European kitchens. The drum has to be large enough to work as a dryer, but small enough to wash efficiently. Unfortunately, the compromise means you can only dry half the washload at a time, so you can never run the whole thing through the entire wash/dry cycle. It also requires more hot water than a normal front loader would use. The reason for the wrinkles that the poster above mentions, is probably from trying to dry a full load. Or using too fast a spin speed in the wash programme. I bought mine because I had very specific challenges in my tiny kitchen, and it was the only washing machine that was shallow enough to fit under my counter, without getting in the way of my oven. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered. I think they're a great space-saving idea, but if you have the space for separate machines, don't bother with the combination one.

Nothing has changed. Combo washer/dryers should only be considered as a last resort, if no other solution is possible. Drying capacity in a combo machine is only half of the maximum washing capacity. If you want to automatically progress to the drying cycle after the wash cycle, you'll be limited to half-size wash loads. Not only will you have to put up with extraordinarily long wash/dry program times, you won't be able to begin a new wash load until each load has completely washed and dried. A real time waster. With a separate dryer, you're able to begin a new wash load while the previous load is drying. If you're considering a compact system for an apartment where venting a dryer isn't possible, the best solution is to go with a compact European washer and stackable stand-alone condensing dryer. Condenser dryers don't require an exhaust vent. You might want to look at the Bosch Axxis line of laundry appliances or the compact Miele laundry appliances. Both brands make stand-alone condenser dryers that can be stacked on the matching washer and that perform just as well and as fast as the respective vented dryers in the same model lines. Stand-alone condenser dryers employ a different and much more efficient drying technology than the extremely slow drying system in the combo washer/dryer machines.

We have a Splendide vented type in our motor home. Works ok if a little slow due to its 120V power limitation. We had the ventless for about a month. It ran and ran and never got the clothes really dry. Will not have another vent free or condensation dryer.

Are you thinking of this for your house? Apartment? RV? There's pros and cons. If you don't do much laundry and time isn't an issue, then they could be good. They take up less space. If you only do one load at a time then the time issue isn't as big a deal. Cons? Generally they're expensive. You either can only wash 1/2 a load or you have to split the load when drying. The ratio for efficient drying is the dryer should be 2x the size of the washer or more. It needs the extra space for ventilation, tumbling and to just work right. Plus you obviously have to run the wash, then the dry cycle rather than overlap for multiple loads. Ventless means you deal with the water in a pail and need to empty it. And non-vented generally take longer to dry than a vented machine. Much would depend on your use and purpose.

Love: space saving, set and forget, no vent to worry about, just plug it in, no gas no 220.

Dislike: clothes seem to be more wrinkled, often even if I get them out promptly, runs longer than expected, does not handle lint especially pet fur well.

Cleans fine, low static.

If you don't like having to wait to do another load, you have a need for two. Instead of doubling the time you spend now, it cuts it in half. Tosei is a Japanese brand seen in laundromats in Japan. They were recently bought by Electrolux. Maybe a combination unit could be coming.
