I'd heard of this place before but never been in a store until yesterday when I stumbled upon it on my way to Costco. I didn't have a lot of time to check it out closely but I bought a couple produce items at a good price. Anyone have opinions on whether it would be worth my while to go here again? It's not nearby but I could make a point of stopping there when I go on a Costco run.
I find it similar to Aldi's, which has become my go- to, but it's not quite as consistent.
I do go to Lidl and for starters, their bakery is very good- their baguettes are super good and I always get that. Their own brand is very good. I've gotten soups, yogurt, and their frozen offerings are kind of like Trader Joe's-worth getting.
The produce is variable. They have a lot of special deals, that are not recurring, and those are great but unpredictable as to what they will have.
The location is not as convenient for me, so I might stop by every other week or so when I'm in the area, but it's definitely worth going.
Lidl and Aldi were started by brothers in Germany and I have both in my area, but Lidl is closer. I grocery shop at several stores and go to Lidl for certain things Their rustic baguette is really good. The produce can be iffy, and I don't often buy meat or fish there. There have really well-priced quality chocolate bars and I buy the crackers there too -- they are not main brands but they are half the price for identical crackers -- "Woven Crackers" instead of Triscuits, or "Thin Wheats" instead of Wheat Thins. They have ethic spices and sauces for much less $$ than even Trader Joe's. Where I am it's a pretty small store and you can't always get the same things every time you go there.
Also yes to the orchids -- $9.99!
Also there is a lot of weird random household, garden or automotive stuff in the middle of the store and it can be amusing to look at what's there.
I was reading up on Lidl and I don't think it was started by brothers - if you can believe the below info from Business Insider.
Is Aldi and Lidl two brothers? Urban myth claims the German discounter rivals Aldi and Lidl were founded by two brothers. That isn't true. Both grocery store empires were founded by different families. Instead, it's actually Aldi's massive global empire that was split into two, with half owned by one brother and half by another.
I'm a regular Aldi shopper but never tried Lidl because there isn't one close by. Like you, the closest is on my way to Costco which also isn't close by for me! Maybe my next Costco run will include a Lidl stop.
We have only Aldi’s here and I love it. They have great meat and vegetables; no florals to speak of though. The Lidl is about 25 minutes away and I have never been in one. Our town is so small I doubt it could support two such stores.
I’ve been to Trader Joe’s twice and was not impressed with anything I bought there so even if I drive by one in a nearby city or town I don’t stop.
After disliking Aldi forever I finally became a convert a few years ago. That is always my first stop and then Kroger (SC) or Target (MN) for whatever I couldn’t buy at Aldi which is about 10 mins from my house in either place. There’s even one by my lake place but about 45 mins away and always very busy so I rarely go there. Trader Joes isn’t close anywhere but there are a few things I stock up on if I’m in the neighborhood. I may stop by Lidl again when I’m in the neighborhood.
