I wouldn't do it. It will look like you run out of material and never finished the job.

People tie in two different types of crown molding all the time. Not the most elegant execution, but it works. Either scribe one to the other or stop the ceiling crown short and finish it off.

Thank you ver much, I didn't think it was that big a deal either but, the installer seemed adamant it wouldn't look right. I will show him your pictures, it looks fine and not very noticeable. Have another question, the TV are above the cabinet is in the same room, I was thinking of putting molding around the two windows beside the TV , someone suggested adding a wainscoating but , not sure on that idea, love your opinion.

Crown molding doesn't seem appropriate for the style of your home. You have drywall returns on your windows. I vote NO to crown molding.

Crown on cabinets is different. They can be viewed similar to furnishings.

The china cabinet looks out of place in the room also.

Cabinets in a more simple design would work better in the room.

Instead of just cutting the crown molding off abruptly, ask the installer to create a return (a small piece of molding that angles back to the wall). This gives the molding a finished look and avoids an awkward, unfinished edge. Consider adding a decorative end cap or corner block where the crown molding stops. This can act as a visual transition and make the stopping point look intentional.

OMG thank you so much for all the great information. I think that coping the corner is a great option. I am not sure why the trim carpenter did not suggest this as he supposedly does crown all the time? I did not really want to do wainscoating just crown around the top , I felt I wanted to add some architectural detail to the space.

Agree with the advice to skip the crown - you have a clean and modern feel in the space and the windows and door/entries don't have trim. If you want to add more impact/drama to their space, I think there are other options -

You can add crown even though you have drywall returns (no casing) for windows/doorways. Your style seems to be more contemporary - not modern - which would allow the crown.

Maybe the tv wall could be an accent wall of some type? I can't see the whole wall in the photo.

Fantastic art, rugs and window treatments can go a long way to bring drama to a space - I feel like that would have a bigger impact than crown

if it were me, I would swap out the tall china hutch for a low sideboard and put a high impact piece of art above it -

fwiw texture also really helps a room come alive, too many hard or glossy surfaces can make a room feel flat

If you are putting up crown you cope it into the other moulding. It’s the only option and looks great. I’m worried about the skills of your trim guy

IMO the cabinets should not have had crown either just a really simple trim piece at the ceiling. The space is contemporary no crown IMO anywhere but now the kitchen is done no more crown . I also would not have the tall piece in the DR

Will agree with other posters - crown moulding isn't really necessary and might even detract.
